MOOC completion and course activities - Center for Instructional Technology

MOOC completion and course activities - Center for Instructional Technology | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

There has been a lot of discussion about MOOC completion, most of which has focused on completion rates: what percent of people complete a MOOC, and how should we calculate that number?  However, what has drawn less attention, but is potentially more interesting, is what in-course activities impact completion.  Understanding whether or not different course elements in a MOOC affect completion can potentially help us better understand best practices in MOOC design.

Why Feedback Needs To Be Integrated Into Flipped Classrooms - Edudemic

Why Feedback Needs To Be Integrated Into Flipped Classrooms - Edudemic | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it
Flipped classrooms are getting plenty of headlines and attention lately in educational circles. While conceptually they sound great the reality is that they require a great deal more effort on behalf of both students and teachers. The need for teachers to develop quality material outside class time is a genuine drain on their limited time …

The MOOC Moment | Booklets | Inside Higher Ed

The MOOC Moment | Booklets | Inside Higher Ed | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

"The MOOC Moment" is a collection of articles -- in print-on-demand format -- about massive open online courses, or MOOCs. The articles aren't today's breaking news, but reflect long-term trends and some of the forward-looking thinking of experts on how MOOCs may change higher education. The goal is to provide these materials (both news articles and opinion essays) in one easy-to-read place. Download the booklet here.

This is the first in a series of such compilations that Inside Higher Ed will be releasing in the months ahead, on a range of topics.

In May, Inside Higher Ed's editors conducted a webinar to talk about the issues raised in the booklet's articles and essays, as well as the latest developments involving MOOCs. To view a recording of the webinar, please click here.

Re-Inventing the Wheel in the Study of Human Character

Re-Inventing the Wheel in the Study of Human Character | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

James Heckman, Nobel Prize winning economist, has just published a 435 page collection called The Myth of Achievement Tests. On the surface it is a well-documented critique of the GED (General Educational Development) examination. But as one leafs through the volume, it turns out to be a 400+ page hymn-of-praise to character education. Heckman and his three co-editors see the development of character as at least as important as IQ/SAT measures, if not more so...

My message: yes! Everyone should be supporting speaking & listening. Our culture has a slowly dying sense of civility. Improved communication practices would go far to turn this slow death around. Unfortunately, though I love technology, it does little to advance meaningful face-to-face discourse. Modeling responsible dialogue and providing opportunities for constructive discussion, debate, and consensus-making is an imperative placed upon teachers, parents, business, and yes, government.

Why The Bauhaus Is Our House As Web Design Moves Into The Future

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, April 16, 5:14 PM

Great work by Simon Collision (@Colly). Picks up for me on slide 17.

1. Acknowledge the machine.

2. Standardize production.

3. Experiment and synthesize.

4. Form follows function.

5. Economy and simplicity.

Those values drove designers at the Bauhaus to create a new approach. How will those values influence our web design going forward?

1. Honesty of construction truth to materials.

2. Develop systems.

3. Holistic web design approach (slide 32 what's golden important). .

4. Mass production and individual expression.

5. Adapt and respond to an evolving world.

Here are points I would make about how Bauhaus values will play an important role in what is next online:

* The machine is increasingly SOCIAL and MOBILE.

* Smart Phones & Apps gamify routine (boring) tasks.

* Holistic design will increasingly mean Mobile Fist design.

* We are all in the community building business (whether we know it or not) & community creates mass production OUT OF individual expression.
* Our adaptations will be social & mobile, gamified & curated.
