Zeitgeist: Visual Literacy A Spirit of our Age and Time

Zeitgeist: Visual Literacy A Spirit of our Age and Time | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

Zeitgeist is German meaning a reflection of the culture of a given age or era.  Today, especially for educators, one of the 'hottest' term (whether we like it or not) is "visual literacy". This sitte provides outstanding images of 2012 for personal and/or classroom reflection and motivation. This image reflects the stand-off of Europe's fiscal cliff.  View more at this interesting site.

Incredible post with awesome and inspiring links, clearly illustrating our changing cultural reliance on visual text and visual literacy along. The photo above is one example - the Shuttle on its way to its next 'home' drives by as two ball-players are otherwise engaged.  Photo is by Wally Skalij/Getty Images and brilliantly expresses our modern culture in ways words might fall short - clearly illustrating the  communicative power of an image.

Choosing the right eLearning methods: factors and elements

Choosing the right eLearning methods: factors and elements | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it
“Many organisations are now transforming their learning and development programs to the eLearning domain. But choosing the right methods for their business based on their needs is still a challenge. Choosing the right eLearning programs depends upon many factors like proper need analysis, target audience analysis, task analysis, topic analysis, and evaluation methods. Apart from these analyses there is the very important principle of Learning Pyramid created by the National Training Laboratories. Choosing the right delivery methods directly impact effectiveness and cost benefit for the organisations.”

How flipped learning works in (and out of) the classroom

How flipped learning works in (and out of) the classroom | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

Flipped learning is more than just having students do homework during the school day. It’s more than just putting the onus on students to teach themselves. In fact, it’s neither of those things. Don’t be fooled by simple explanations of flipped classrooms that simplify a highly complex undertaking.

How Fractals Bring Imaginary Cities to Life

How Fractals Bring Imaginary Cities to Life | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it
Artist Emily Garfield maps places that don't exist. "I think that's related to the way cities grow in real life."

Emily Garfield like to say that she grows cities. With pen, ink, and watercolor, the Boston-based artist creates maps of imaginary places that tap into the essence of urban form.

Garfield has long been interested by the presentation of architecture in visual art. The inviting, surrealist arcades and sidewalks of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico inspired Garfield to begin producing her own street-level dreamscapes as an art student at Brown University.

But it was when she created her first aerial view of a fantasy city—an abstract web of streets, bridges, and blocks—that she got a particularly positive response from other people. Even without any text, Garfield's drawings were strongly recognizable as maps...

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

This is a great new game from Google which helps students develop their vocabulary through spelling and pronunciation. Using Chrome, students can actually speak to the computer and listen to the pronunciation of the words as they build a word tower. They can even listen to a speaking dictionary telling them what the words mean. This should get your students working autonomously to develop their own vocabulary and if they sign in they can track and share their results.
