5 Things You Need To Know About The Future Of Math

5 Things You Need To Know About The Future Of Math | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it
“Believe it or not, math is changing. Or at least the way we use math in the context of our daily lives is changing. The way you learned math will not prepare your children with the mathematical skills they need in the 21st Century. Don’t take my word for it. I [...]”

Elaine Roberts, Ph.D's curator insight, July 25, 7:39 AM

Apparently this is math week.

". . .but the skill that is in great demand today, and will continue to grow, is the ability to take a novel problem, possibly not well-defined, and likely not having a single “right” answer, and make progress on it, in some cases (but not all!) “solving” it (whatever that turns out to mean)." That is, by the way, the essence of the purpose of Common Core. Just sayin'.

Indirectly and directly this article argues for hands-on learning, whether you choose to filter that through gamification, using manipulatives, coding (Code.org), MakerMovement, genius hour, or all of the above. Provide students with fundamentals and a working hypothesis, and then let the students experiment and then discover the "why" and the "how." So much learning!!!!

Nearly 75 Percent of Faculty Incorporated Technology into their Teaching in the Past Year

Nearly 75 Percent of Faculty Incorporated Technology into their Teaching in the Past Year | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it
“When it comes to technology in the classroom, phrases like “faculty resistance” and the importance of getting “faculty buy-in” are tossed around with great frequency. But is that perception still valid? Are all instructors so set in their ways, skeptical of anything new, and fearful of deviating from what they’ve done that it’s nearly impossible to get them to try something new?”

European Training Networks (ETN)

ETNs are multi-partner research training networks and must be composed of at least three beneficiaries established in at least three different EU Member States or Associated Countries. Above this minimum, the participation of other organisations, including international organisations and those from Other Third Countries, is possible under the conditions provided by the Horizon 2020 Rules for Participation. Although there is no pre-defined size for these multi-partner networks, it is strongly recommended to keep the size of the consortium between 6 and 10 beneficiaries. It is expected that beneficiaries will be drawn from the academic and non-academic sectors and that ETN proposals will offer intersectoral and interdisciplinary research training as well as high-quality supervision arrangements. Each beneficiary must recruit and host at least one ESR.

Cristina Oliveira's curator insight, July 24, 3:00 AM

Applications are open for European Training Networks (ETN), until 13 January 2015.
