Social media has become an essential part of our daily lives, but, with so many networks out there fighting for our attention which networks are we really using? Currently Facebook is still the most popular site with 62% of adult global Internet users actively logging in, with nearly half of these users active on Twitter too...

In Indonesia, the total internet user reach 23,% out of the total population and mostly are young people, 15-19 years old.Recently, we have seen the growth of Twitter users . This is an opportunity for librarians to  a good opportunity for librarian to reach more audience

Siri Anderson's curator insight, January 26, 2014 2:20 PM

I find it interesting to note parallels and contrasts between use of social networks in f2f environments and online environments.  In some instances the online version works better for those who flounder in person. In some cases people who love the real world interactions disparage the online ones. But for most of us, there seems to be a parallel in our patterns and style it would seem. Where should children "learn" how to do this, or is that lesson beside the point at this time?

This infographic is great for showing how basic an infographic may be, and to help students understand what goes into creating a graph. The four key concepts, collecting data, sorting data, arranging data and presenting the data visually (so others may understand it) are true when students learn how to make graphs...and most students have played with Legos at some point so there is a quick connection. Did you know that between 2011 and 2012, time spent on social media increased by some 30 billion minutes, representing a year-on-year increase of 37 percent?

But, according to one study, while Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest remain popular with users aged 30 and over, it’s the formerly niche social platforms such as Reddit, Github and DeviantArt that can boast the highest representation amongst the important 18-29 demographic.

How often have you checked your social media accounts today? Feeling unplugged is a problem for many people.  This infographic from mylife.com illustrates how people are addicted to social media, and what they rather do than give up their Internet lifeline.

Two out of three people are afraid they’re missing something important on email, Facebook, Twitter, or other accounts. In the same survey, three out of five people wished there was a solution to monitor their various communication options.

This infographic is based on the survey by Harris, and conveys a growing trend—social media overload...

The anxiety about missing out is not something new - it is like a child who doesn't want to go to bed when the others (adults, older children) are still having fun. It is simply in a new arena. This being connected all the time to digital media and communications devices is the new thing - not the anxiety.

We'll learn to live with it - nice infographic.

10 years of social media by the numbers [infographic]

10 years of social media by the numbers [infographic] | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

Facebook launched ten years ago in February 2004. Social media hasn't, doesn't and won't stay still. As Myspace rises, Friendster declines. The pattern's repeated itself a few times already, and even Google hasn't quite cracked the magic social network formula, at least not yet. The crown currently belongs to Facebook, a company that's made some big, big startup purchases on the way, although Twitter continues to pack (arguably) more influence. A whole lot has happened in the last decade, but we've tried to squeeze the more interesting parts into something a little more visual.

In the past 5 years social media growth has exploded around the globe and, as platforms such as Twitter and Facebook expand and begin to increasingly mirror and reflect “real life”, they take on many of the problems of the offline world, too.

For example: security. With millions of social media views, updates and registrations taking place literally each and every minute, the potential for identify thieves, hackers and good, old-fashioned burglars to exploit your personal information has never been greater.

Which means it’s solely your responsibility to ensure you’re protecting yourself when using these channels...

Richard Platt's curator insight, December 8, 2013 11:40 PM

(from the Curator of IoT & Wearables): We've stayed away from many academic's re: how to enable students to be better at problem solving and innovating, (because most academics think they already know what innovation and complex problem solving is all about and well not to put too fine a point on it they just don't),

We do take issue wtih the status quo of academia.  Obviously we have strongly held views on engineering education and problem solving / innovaiton, but they are warranted and justified.

We see most academic work in the area of innovating, problem solving / problem finding and more specifically in complex problem solving in the domain of engineering  to be broken., biased and prejudicial

Nonetheless we do give credit in this post by Mia MacMeekin as it is a move in the right direction, we just don't see it going far enough to make problem solving and problem finding cool or effective enough for students to really be able to do anything significant with when it comes time for them to contribute.  Sorry we call it as we see it..

UX 101: What Is User Experience? [infographic] | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

When it comes to design, user experience is one of the key things.

According to this infographic, 68% of users leave because of poorly designed websites and 62% of customers base future purchases on past experiences. These stats alone are clear enough that UX (User Experience) isn’t something that can be taken lightly. The life and blood of your business might very well depend on this factor alone.

The true cost of water

The true cost of water | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

The market’s perverse water pricing creates opportunities for businesses that look beyond the market and consider the true cost of H20.

The environmental and social costs of global business water use add up to around $1.9 trillion per year, according to new research.

Some of these external water costs already are being internalized and hitting bottom lines: Just last year, the worst drought in the United States in 50 years sent commodity prices skyrocketing. Companies, especially those in the food, beverage and apparel sectors whose margins and supply chains are tightly linked to agricultural commodities, can use the true cost of water to get ahead of the trend of external costs increasingly being internalized through regulations, pricing or shortages...

How and Why Social Engineering Works [Infographic]

How and Why Social Engineering Works [Infographic] | Wiki_Universe | Scoop.it

For many people in today’s world, being “online” has become a constant status. High-speed internet, smart phones and tablet PC’s have enabled us to stay connected whenever and wherever we are.

Social hackers capitalize on vulnerabilities when it comes to keeping personal details private, and the problem has only seemed to get worse as the digital age has developed.

Techniques as simple as looking over a shoulder as someone enters bank details or passwords are often used, as well as sending out deceiving emails ridden with malware and viruses that can take control of your computer. Hackers pose as a trusted entity in email blasts that utilize mind tricks to get the viewer to click on the link that will trigger the infection of your computer.

Everyone with an internet connection is vulnerable, and public awareness is the first step in ending this growing problem...
