Billy R Bennett's curator insight, January 2, 2013 6:09 PM

Another good set of New Year's resolutions.  You will see much this year about "sustainable engagement."    Why?  The global workforce is tired.  Reductions in force which during the recession have been maintained .  People were removed but little was done to make work easier or better. Productivity increased but how sustainable is it?

With the economic fog in the west beginning to clear, we should see significant "ramp ups" in activity and competition for people will intensify. Hence the emphasis on "engagement"... how to keep productivity up, and people focused on the work of the organization instead of the greener pastures elsewhere.

Let me hit the high points with some important questions:

  1. Do your employees know what they must do to help the organization win?"
  2. Are you removing the obstacles they see to their success?  (or just the ones you think they have?)
  3. Are you giving them tools that make work and success easier?
  4. Are you preparing to ways to improve how you demonstrate value and appreciation for individuals and groups that go above the minimum to help the organization win?
  5. Do all of the pieces of your HR supply chain align and work seamlessley to acquire and maintain the skills needed to win?

Analysis: Fiscal cliff deal called a dud on deficit front

Analysis: Fiscal cliff deal called a dud on deficit front | Why Management ? | Scoop.it

by KIM DIXON (Reuters)

In the controversy surrounding the "fiscal cliff" issue, it's easy to forget that the origin of the entire debate was a professed desire to reduce swollen federal deficits.

Whether the target was $4 trillion over 10 years, as proposed by the Bowles-Simpson deficit reduction commission, or in the $2 trillion range, as tossed around by House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner and President Barack Obama, the idea was to rein in total debt that now tops $16 trillion.

By those standards, the bill passed by the U.S. Senate early on New Year's Day to avoid the cliff's automatic steep tax hikes and across-the-board spending cuts, looks paltry indeed.

I hate the original title to this article.  It may lead to a dangerous assumption that all "consulting" may be the same.

This was a study by the World Bank and Stanford researchers testing the impact of management technology

Here is what I agree with...

Success is built with clairty of purpose, roles and assignments - and systems/procedures to manage production.  Sometimes things are very difficult to change without external help.  Systems can be so chaotic - for good and bad reasons - rapid growth or gross inattention.  Either way difficulty seeing means difficulty doing.   When people are drowning, telling them to swim faster is not helping.  That's when externals - with experience and fresh eyes can play jump in to help.   However it's not any experience - there must also be experience at getting out of difficult situations and skill at helping people to fish for themselves.

Talent - know how - is unevenly distributed around the world.   Even within top rated countries.  However, the full understanding is worse than that.  Some top rated countries have talent problems due past to focus more on financial dealing than building productivity...or resolving the productivity issue with poorly implemented technology.  A generation of leaders who grew up in that period may not have receieved the benefit of experience in "making things better" and aligning people to work.  When seeking external help make sure the people helping have the right experience for your situation.

Experienced external talent can help people create their own systems and behaviors producing real results.  In our experience, much more than the 20% return mentioned in the article.

From the comments, you see what I expected to be the reaction to the article... skepticism based upon the experience of bad companies with bad external help.

We built our business on being external help (notice I avoid the C word) to fill the gaps many organizations missed in their development... or were not ready to build.  By bringing experience from top  companies and tested practices we bring hope, alignment and engagement to struggling companies...or accelerate success in healthy ones.

www.pyramidodi.com

We help with interventions to align people, systems and behaviors building great work, great workplaces and released potential.

Think of us as lifeguards who save the drowning, then teach them how to prevent it from happening again.

The Fish Firm's comment, February 12, 2013 2:20 PM
@MarrilDeFiddes we make a strong effort to do both... Brand awareness mostly our first year and now we are focusing on material 'worth' downloading in exchange for lead's email as well as developing some online products... Locally, I focus on referrals from current or previous clients for lead generation... It's all a slow process!

How to Use a Google Docs Content Template | Liz Strauss | Why Management ? | Scoop.it

Sorry, Word. We had a good run.

We created hundreds of beautiful documents together over the years, but it’s time to move on. I’ve moved up, into the “cloud.” I’ve moved all of my content creation to Google Docs.

Why? There are some obvious reasons:

No crashes. No “Oops, forgot to save!” Google has never lost a single word I’ve typed. No version control issues. Everything is easy to share. No more email attachments or wondering if I’m looking at the latest version.Word was always high-maintenance. It’s kind of a resource hog and slowed down my computer. But Google Docs? I’ve got a browser open anyway. Why not use it?

So, let’s use Docs. Here’s how to use a Google Docs content marketing template....

What Travelers Can Expect in 2013

What Travelers Can Expect in 2013 | Why Management ? | Scoop.it

When you arrive at the airport and board your flights next year, you'll likely see more Wi-Fi, more seats with extra legroom, more lie-flat beds, a more speedy security process and, of course, more fees.

Also coming in 2013 are more new aircraft and major airport overhauls, as most airlines are now making profits and raising their capital spending. United Airlines, for example, says it will spruce up neglected airport facilities, such as Washington Dulles International, and add new seats and bigger overhead storage bins to aircraft. New procedures aimed at speeding up boarding are in the works at United, too.
