How Alex Day Became The Biggest Unsigned Singer In The World, Without Touring

How Alex Day Became The Biggest Unsigned Singer In The World, Without Touring | Musical Musings | Scoop.it
The future of music, without record labels.
Courtney Wosick's insight:

In the current state of our digital culture there are almost too many options for artists to share their craft. Ironically, because everyone is so accessible today a big problem for musicians everywhere is connecting with their fans. They spread themselves thin by using every single social media outlet possible to create popularity amongst fans instead of building reliable relationships with them. This is something that Alex Day, the most successful unsigned singer in history, understands.

In realizing his passion to write, play, record, produce, and sing all of his music Alex embraced the limitations of being an unsigned artist. By creating videos on YouTube he was able to access almost every part of the globe and cultivate a loyal fan base. A key element in any successful artists’ career is developing human relationships with fans. This can be difficult if someone uses social media for pure looks rather than utilizing it to its fullest potential. Alex Day is a prime example of someone who uses social media correctly from a career standpoint.

In doing this, he also demonstrates that it is possible to be a successful musician without any attachments to a record label. In fact, he makes it seem better that way!  He states in the article above that, “Labels think they know better than you what your musical direction should be…They start asking for royalties on your music before they've even done anything for you. Unless you're made a priority act you'll sit around not being able to do anything with them, but you won't be able to do anything without them either, so it's likely you'll be completely stifled.” Alex goes on to talk about how he enjoys having full power over his material and being able to do anything he wants to do.  Along with this he also reaps the full benefits financially making it a win-win situation.  So in the end his limitations are not actually limiting at all. They are just the opposite. Alex’s story brings hope for musicians everywhere as he proves that there is more than one way of having a successful career in the music industry.

I think this would be a great play by google. Instead of resisting technology they would be working with it. In doing they would be moving with the chances in how music is distributed and also be a main source for music buyers. Streaming is the way of the future so why not start now?
