Physiography and Geology of the Rock - Vox Online News

Physiography and Geology of the Rock - Vox Online News | Why Geology Rocks | Scoop.it

The Southern Plateaux have been eroded into a thick sequence of Gibraltar Limestone originally deposited as horizontal sediments, these beds of Limestone are still the "right way up" but have subsequently been tilted by earth movements so that they now "dip to the east" at moderate to high angels (45-85).

The Limestone is a strong rock, so erosion by the sea has formed steep coastal cliffs.  The Main Ridge is also formed principally of massive Gibraltar Limestone.  There is good evidence that here it is not right way up but that the bedding planes are upside down and although still dipping at moderate to high angles, the dip is to the West.  The Limestone is underlain by younger Catalan Bay Shale's contorted mud slaps to the northeast and east of the ridge and overlaid with older shale's along the west coast.  These shale formations are weaker than the Limestone so are more easily eroded and do not form prominent cliffs.

A fault zone, the "Great Main Fault" extends northwest southeast from the Dockyard South Gate on the west coast to near" Hole-In-the-Wall" on the east coast, separating the eastward dipping limestone of the Southern Plateaux from the westward dipping limestone of the Main Ridge.
