The value of sportsmanship in business

The value of sportsmanship in business | Whole Brain Leadership | Scoop.it
Winning doesn't have to come at the expense of honor, dignity and class
Bill Palladino - MLUI's insight:

So earlier this week my step-son had a volleyball game.  The refs made a few difficult calls, mostly relaxing the rules a bit.  The boy is ten, and this is thought of as a learning league.

After the game however, he came home rather upset and suggested that the team lost the game "because the refs were terrible."  You can imagine the parental manuveuring that ensued.  Sportsmanship and all of it's subtle variants were the topic at the dinner table and beyond.

In business, this is an unusual request.  Aren't we, after all, out to beat the other guy?  And isn't it part of fair-play to kick him when he's down?  Well, maybe not.  Here's a story from CBS Moneywatch that takes a look at what's appropriate sportsman-like behavior for the business athlete.

Take A Peek Inside Starbucks's $35 Million Leadership Lab [Video]

Take A Peek Inside Starbucks's $35 Million Leadership Lab [Video] | Whole Brain Leadership | Scoop.it

This fall, Starbucks hauled 1,000 lighting instruments, 445 chain motors, 120 speakers, 21 projection screens, and 5,000 live coffee plants to the conference center in Houston and spent three weeks installing a "Leadership Lab." What Starbucks doesn't spend on commercials, it makes up for with this three-day spectacle (I was embedded in the Lab for a day; here's what it was like). The goal is to mobilize its employees to become brand evangelists.

"Effective problem solving.  When you are able to communicate to your employees and co-workers clearly and successfully about real issues and problems, this can lead to a deeper understanding of problems. A deeper understanding will lead everyone to a quicker and more effective problem solution."

Mea culpa!  I'll admit to talking way too much.  Funny thing is I can hear myself do it, consciously tell myself "shut it", but it's a difficult request of any ego.  Learning to listen well, and really listen, not just sit there thinking of ways to respond to others is the key.  I find myself thinking, "let it wash over you Bill.  No need to say anything just yet."  I'm getting better at it these days.  What's your take on how you listen, or not, in your own conversations?
