Türkiye Suriye’ye 2010-2011 Yıllarında Yaptığı Toplam Silah İhracatından % 59 Daha Fazlasını Haziran-Ekim 2013′te Gerçekleştirmiş | Which one has the priority: Political Economy OR Economic Policy | Scoop.it

In 100 Years: Leading Economists Predict the Future

In 100 Years: Leading Economists Predict the Future | Which one has the priority: Political Economy OR Economic Policy | Scoop.it

This pithy and engaging volume shows that economists may be better equipped to predict the future than science fiction writers. Economists’ ideas, based on both theory and practice, reflect their knowledge of the laws of human interactions as well as years of experimentation and reflection. Although perhaps not as screenplay-ready as a work of fiction, these economists’ predictions are ready for their close-ups. In this book, ten prominent economists—including Nobel laureates and several likely laureates—offer their ideas about the world of the twenty-second century.

In scenarios that range from the optimistic to the guardedly gloomy, these thinkers consider such topics as the transformation of work and wages, the continuing increase in inequality, the economic rise of China and India, the endlessly repeating cycle of crisis and (projected) recovery, the benefits of technology, the economic consequences of political extremism, and the long-range effects of climate change. For example, Daron Acemoglu offers a thoughtful discussion of how trends of the last century—including uneven growth, technological integration, and resource scarcity—might translate into the next; Robert Shiller provides an innovative view of future risk management methods using information technology; 2012 Nobelist Alvin Roth projects his theory of Matching Markets into the next century, focusing on schools, jobs, marriage and family, and medicine; Nobelist Robert Solow considers the shift away from remunerated labor, among other subjects; and Martin Weitzman raises the intriguing but alarming possibility of using geoengineering techniques to mitigate the inevitable effects of climate change.

The Fed in 2014: The Key Decision to Watch For

The Federal Reserve finally began its long-awaited reduction of bond-buying activity in its most recent meeting, setting the stage for an eventual end to quantitative easing. But there's still one key decision that the Fed hasn't yet made that could define the direction of the stock market for years to come.

In the following video, Dan Caplinger, The Motley Fool's director of investment planning, looks at the crucial element of Fed policy that hasn't yet been determined: the speed of future tapering. Dan notes that if the Fed keeps cutting by $10 billion per month at each of its meetings during 2014, quantitative easing will end before the year is out. But if there are pauses, it could push into 2015. Dan goes through the ramifications that could have, first focusing on bond investments Vanguard Total Bond (NYSEMKT: BND  ) and PIMCO Total Return (NYSEMKT: BOND  ) , and then turning to financial stocks JPMorgan Chase(NYSE: JPM  ) and Travelers (NYSE: TRV  ) . Dan concludes that the January meeting should give big clues about which way the Fed will move in the future.

World Population Density Map

World Population Density Map<br/>Dünya Nüfus Yoğunluğu Haritası | Which one has the priority: Political Economy OR Economic Policy | Scoop.it

What I love about this map is that insights spring right out of it. A few that came to my mind:

The old world (Asia & Europe) is still more heavily populated than the new.Population in the new world tends to be more clustered around cities (and roads) than in Europe or Asia.Population density in Russia goes much farther east than I’d realized.Moscow is much farther east than any other European city. All of Egypt’s population lives along the Nile.France and Spain are far more centered around their cities than Germany.Population density in the United States drops off sharply around the 100th meridian. There are no “empty” spots in India or Eastern China.Southwest Africa is quite empty.Deserts suck. So does tundra.

Do you see anything when you look at the map? The data comes from the Gridded Population of the World project.

The next sudden stop

The next sudden stop | Which one has the priority: Political Economy OR Economic Policy | Scoop.it

Financial crises are generally preceded by credit booms and a build-up of external debts. Although it is unclear whether Turkey is experiencing a financial bubble, as of 2013, 58% of the corporate sector’s debt was denominated in foreign currencies. This column argues that this explains the Central Bank of Turkey’s interventions to prop up the value of the Turkish lira. Given the relatively low level of reserves and the unfolding corruption scandal, it is a critical question how long the Bank can continue to do so.
