"Big data isn't just about helping retailers sell more products. Thanks to a project in development in Western Australia, it might also help reduce accidents on large mining and construction sites.

Synaptor's critical capability is its capacity to capture and manipulate live data, such as incoming reports of potential hazards like new potholes in roads or workers not wearing appropriate safety gear.

Synaptor analyses these reports and plots the data in real time on an interactive risk map, which is used to predict when and how an individual is most likely to be injured. It then generates an alert."
Glen Evans's curator insight, March 11, 2014 12:38 PM

With the advancement of technology it only makes sense to harness it, as to aid companies to prevent accidents in the Mining industry.  Through projects like this we are better able to understand the surrounding work environment and possible risk factors which may influence the potential for accidents in the work place.

Cassie Douglas's insight:

Man killed in mining accident operating a continuos miner machine. The question is how did he come to get trapped between the machine and the wall? What safety procedures we're taken and what were they? Something's gone wring here? Accidents like this are both devastating and sad but hopefully something can be learnt from These errors.

OH&S personnell need to be proactive in their field to minimise the risk to staff in the workplace.  It is interesting that in the USA, OH&S specialists require a minimum 4yr qualification, where as in Australia, this is not necessary.  Employment of properly qualified OH&S staff could further better the safety of workplaces within Australia.

I have scooped this off a fellow student because it is a very good example of many things, not least of which the reason why we investigate every incident and have a continuous improvement plan in place. As a result of the lessons learnt from each incident we can implement measures that make it that much safer for everyone on site. Great scoop Cassie.
