Interpreter pay threatens court system

Interpreter pay threatens court system | What would you lose if nobody translated? | Scoop.it
Translators understand the need for their services in the halls of justice. Recently, 20 Spanish interpreters signed a petition requesting a pay structure that “reflects both the expertise required and the increased cost of living.”

Gender neutral 'hen' enters dictionary - The Local

Gender neutral 'hen' enters dictionary - The Local | What would you lose if nobody translated? | Scoop.it
The ever-controversial pronoun 'hen' has won its battle and is set to officially become part of the Swedish language.
Thomas Kis-Major's insight:

How lucky for us Hungarians not to have gender positive pronouns, only  a gender neutral one: "ő". Could it be that it is not luck but an ancestral egalitarian attitude? I am not claiming that gender discrimination was/is not present in Hungary, however women were able to achieve prominent positions throughout our history (mostly in the upper echelons of society).

Thomas Kis-Major's insight:

Well deserved! And I would love if Betsy Benjaminson would get the Award next year. She is a  self-proclaimed whistleblower, who provided internal Toyota documents to news organizations including CNN and Corporate Counsel, an affiliate of The National Law Journal, involving alleged defects that caused Toyota’s cars and trucks to suddenly accelerate out of control. (See story further down.)

And I had to scrap my Mirage for the same reason!

What is the Future of the English Language?

What is the Future of the English Language? | What would you lose if nobody translated? | Scoop.it
English, as any other language, is a living and dynamic system, and it transforms according to the way its speakers use it. For this reason, today's English will be very different in about a century. Ben Bowlin, the author of the blog HowStuffWorks, consults this question in a very informative video, which you can watch below.
Thomas Kis-Major's insight:

1) When I tried to correct a Korean friend's English  in Seoul, he said: Oh, this is Korenglish.

2) It amuses me enormously watching the learned, mechanical, unnatural gesticulations of Anglo-Saxons.  Imagine the above video delivered by an Italian :)

UCLA addresses 'lost in translation' issues in Chinese medicine

UCLA addresses 'lost in translation' issues in Chinese medicine | What would you lose if nobody translated? | Scoop.it
Millions of people in the West today utilize traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, herbs and massage therapies. Yet only a handful of Chinese medical texts have so far been translated into English. Given the complexity of the language and concepts, there is a need for accurate, high-quality translations. Researchers at the UCLA's Center for East-West Medicine have published a document designed to help evaluate and digest Chinese medical texts with greater sensitivity and comprehension.

Neologism Database

Neologism Database | What would you lose if nobody translated? | Scoop.it
Languages are constantly evolving. Though purists may shudder at what they see as the degradation of ‘correct’ language use, innovative and new ways of using grammar, syntax and vocabulary show a bill of good health for a language. There are many websites devoted largely to contributing to new words. Click here to find a list …
Thomas Kis-Major's insight:

Cheeky advice for translators' eyes only: If you cannot find the translation of a word, coin one and if called to account, claim it is a neologism :)

Stratus Video Interpreting predicts $1 billion market shift to video remote interpreting by 2016 as court and healthcare systems heed cost-effectiveness | mHealthNews | What would you lose if nobody translated? | Scoop.it
As the high costs of face-to-face interpreting and the inconsistencies associated with over-the-phone interpreting present a barrier for language services in court and healthcare systems nationwide, Stratus Video Interpreting maintains that the industry is shifting over to a more economical means of interpretation known as video remote interpretation (VRI). Stratus officials deem VRI to be an emerging national standard and the key to providing equal access to quality language services.
