Viacom Says the Internet Made Its Reruns Less Valuable

Viacom Says the Internet Made Its Reruns Less Valuable | What's up, TV? | Scoop.it
Old reality shows aren't what they used to be, which is one of the reasons the cable giant just took a $750 million charge.
Television Studies's insight:

Reruns are definitely something I'd be less likely to watch (unless you're 'Friends' on Netflix)--this focuses a bit more on rerun reality television. There are so many various online streaming options, now, like the article mentions: it is more appealing to go to something like SnapChat or YouTube to get your "reality" fix. - Julie T.

What 'Broad City' can teach 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' about racial humor

What 'Broad City' can teach 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' about racial humor | What's up, TV? | Scoop.it
Kimmy Schmidt is unbreakable — but the show's racial plots need some breaking in. Why 'Broad City' represents a more modern approach.
Television Studies's insight:

This article gives a great comparison of how shows: 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' and 'Broad City' approach  the topic of race. With 'Unbreakable', the article mentions: "If there's a person of color in the scene, you'll know" whereas 'Broad City' takes a more subtle approach. I enjoyed most of 'Unbreakable' but found that some of the humor pertaining to race just rubbed me the wrong way. - Julie T.

Hang out with tiny Mulder and Scully in their miniature X-Files office | What's up, TV? | Scoop.it
Beyond its compelling sci-fi horror and its intriguing (though often inscrutable) plot convolutions, a generous chunk of the The X-Files’ success lay in the powerful chemistry between FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. Netflix Ratings Revealed: New Data Sheds Light on Original Series’ Audience Levels

Netflix Ratings Revealed: New Data Sheds Light on Original Series’ Audience Levels | What's up, TV? | Scoop.it
One of the media business’s best-kept secrets isn’t entirely confidential after all: Netflix audience ratings. Select content companies have been turning to San Diego-based Luth Research, which has...
Television Studies's insight:

It still beats me *exactly* how ratings are figured, but Netflix has revealed audience ratings for their Netflix Original Series, with "Daredevil", "House of Cards", and "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" attracting the most viewers. Aside from TV sets (with gaming consoles, smart TV-streaming), Netflix measures ratings through computer, tablet, and smartphone-streaming. Unlike the Nielsen ratings, Netflix does not measure per-episode ratings, but season viewership, looking at percentage of subscribers viewing a show's season, over a period of time. So, it is a rough measurement, but a great start to see what their viewers are interested in, and probably great information for television networks. - Julie T.

'Twin Peaks' cast members band together to lure David Lynch back to revival

'Twin Peaks' cast members band together to lure David Lynch back to revival | What's up, TV? | Scoop.it
The 'Twin Peaks' cast is, much like its fans, determined to make the show's revival happen with David Lynch aboard.
Television Studies's insight:

A few days ago, it was announced that Showtime's 'Twin Peaks' revival would continue without David Lynch, and my world was torn to bits. I'm exaggerating, but felt slightly stubborn, preferring no conclusion to the series at all, if it was lacking Lynch in the process. Not only were fans upset with the news, but cast members also felt the need to express their want for Lynch to return. A compilation video is included in this article, of cast members describing what 'Twin Peaks' is like without David Lynch. 'Twin Peaks' without David Lynch is like...a log without its lady...

Television Studies's insight:

I have noticed a trend in television and horror cult-classics, such as "Psycho" and "Silence of the Lambs" being turned into television series: "Bates Motel" (A&E) and "Hannibal" (NBC). I heard great things about both shows, and it seems as though networks are relying on television adaptations to draw viewers in; I enjoyed "Let the Right One In" and "Let me In" and would be into watching it as a TV series on A&E.
