The evolution of a rhino poacher

The evolution of a rhino poacher | What's Happening to Africa's Rhino? | Scoop.it

Johannesburg - With a single gunshot, the chase is on. Near to where the shot rings out, a section ranger tries his best to pinpoint where that bullet was fired.

What that shot means is that there is yet another new crime scene somewhere deep in the bush, where a poacher has just killed a rhino.

It is a new modus operandi where poachers come armed with large-calibre hunting rifles, and drop rhinos with a single shot.

Rangers prefer it when the poachers use their usual choice of weapon – the AK-47.

Rhino Poachers held in Kruger Park

A suspected poacher was shot and wounded and four others were arrested in the Kruger National Park over the past long weekend, SANParks said on Wednesday.

They were arrested in separate incidents after being spotted by field rangers on Saturday and Monday, said spokesman Ike Phaahla.

“The first three were arrested in the Tshokwane area after they were spotted entering the park from Mozambique on Saturday,” said Phaahla.

The other two were spotted in the Malelane section of the park, where one of them was shot on Monday.

He was taken to hospital under police guard.

A silencer, three high-calibre hunting rifles, ammunition and other poaching equipment was seized during the arrests. - Sapa

Wildlife Margrit's insight:

Good job field rangers. With enough well trained and equipped rangers they can make a difference for the rhino and other wildlife species threatened by poachers.

Retired general hired to oversee anti-poaching operations in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- The South African National Parks (SANParks) said on Wednesday that it has acquired the services of a retired army general to oversee the overall anti- poaching operations in the country.
