Almost 3000 people, some from as far away as India, Ireland and New Zealand have added their signatures to an online petition supporting court action to stop a white rhino trophy hunt at Lalibela game reserve outside Grahamstown.

 

Despite the counter on the online petition continuing to tick over, both Lalibela and Bayeti – the managing company of the entire conservancy of which Lalibela is a part – have indicated they intended fighting a high court interdict aimed at stopping the hunt, which, according to court papers, also included two lion and two buffalo...

Kruger under siege: Environment Minister presented updated rhino poaching stats yesterday – the latest figures are at oxpeckers.org.
In 2015 there has been a 27% increase in poachers entering the Kruger. An average of 12 active poacher groups are operating in the park every day, and anti-poaching teams have made contact with heavily armed poachers 95 times so far this year, an average of close to three times a week.

After cutting rhino horns into discs and mixing with pieces of wood, the horns are being smuggled out from Pemba via Oliver Tambo International Airport and onward to Hong Kong. Alert Hong Kong customs officials intercepted the shipment.
