Steyl: Rhino 'poacher' to hand himself over

Steyl: Rhino 'poacher' to hand himself over | What's Happening to Africa's Rhino? | Scoop.it
JOHANNESBURG - An alleged rhino poacher who was initially charged alongside convicted poacher Chumlong Lemthongthai, is set to hand himself over to the Hawks on Wednesday.

Marnus Steyl was charged together with Lemthongthai, but was released shortly before the Thai national was given an unprecedented 40-year sentence last month.

Lemtongthai had pleaded guilty to using fake trophy hunters in order to abuse the permit system.

He hunted rhino and exported their horns to South East Asia.

Eyewitness News can confirm the Hawks have a deal with Steyl's lawyer, for the alleged poacher to hand himself over at the Vryburg Magistrate's Court this morning.

The Hawks have apparently decided to reopen the case against Steyl and another Thai national.
