7 rhino horns seized at Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport

7 rhino horns seized at Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport | What's Happening to Africa's Rhino? | Scoop.it

Noi Bai airport customs officers have found and seized seven rhino horn hidden in the luggage of two passengers who arrived from Qatar. Meanwhile, three parts of a horn suspected to be from a rhino have been detained in Quang Ninh Province....

The two men had taken Flight QR610 from Doha, Qatar to Hanoi that day.

Neither Chien or Than had reported the horns in their customs declaration sheets submitted to Noi Bai airport customs, and when the horns were exposed, they failed to show an import license for the horns or any documents about their origin.

The horns weighed 23.5 kg in total and were wrapped in many layers of plastic and silver papers.

Before wrapping the horn with those materials, Than and Chien had used garlic to cover the surface of each horn to reduce the natural scent of the horn and avoid detection by police dogs, customs offers said.

Officials detained the passports of the two traffickers and sent the horns to the Vietnam Science and Technology Institute for testing to determine which species of rhino they had belonged to.

The total value of the horns is estimated at tens of billions of dong (VND1 billion = US$48,000)....

On the early morning of November 7, traffic police in northern Quang Ninh Province caught N.N.T. of Hanoi’s Thanh Tri District with three sections of a horn suspected to be that of a rhino on a train travelling on the Hanoi-Cam Pha route.

The sections, weighing about 3 kg in total, were hidden in T.’s backpack.

T confessed to police that he had been hired by a friend of his, who was identified simply as D, to bring the horn parts to Quang Ninh’s Cam Pha Town for VND2 million (US$96)....

Kids Protest! Urge Hong Kong Museum of Art to remove ivory and rhino horn exhibits | What's Happening to Africa's Rhino? | Scoop.it

About 20 people gathered outside the Museum of Art in Tsim Sha Tsui yesterday morning to protest against an exhibition of artefacts made from rhino horn and elephant ivory.

The demonstrators, many of them children, waved placards outside the Salisbury Road museum, accusing it of benefiting the black-market trade in the items.

The museum is hosting until September 28 the exhibition of 270 Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasty (1644-1911) objects made exclusively for the imperial court. The artefacts are from local man C.P.Lin's personal collection...

Swaziland King Speaks Up For Rhino, Elephant and Denounces Animal Poaching

Swaziland King Speaks Up For Rhino, Elephant and Denounces Animal Poaching | What's Happening to Africa's Rhino? | Scoop.it

Speaking during the 50th Anniversary celebrations for Nature Conservation in Swaziland hosted by the Big Game Parks at Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary yesterday, the king expressed concern at the growth of rhino and elephant dehorning in the continent stating the country is strongly against it.

He said he was mindful of the challenges that all those involved in conserving nature and wildlife face daily, but highlighted that the country is fully behind them.

“We have heard of rhinos and elephants poaching in other countries and we are strongly against it. It does not matter which country the wildlife that is threatened belongs to, but as long as it is in Africa it also belong to us as Swazis.

“The cutting off of rhino horns should not continue as it is a very bad habit. Poachers should desist from this act. If the dehorning of the rhinos continues then it would mean our future generation will not be cognisant of the fact that rhinos had horns after all,” he remarked....

Wildlife Margrit's insight:

We found that Swaziland's King really does punish wildlife poachers and really does stand behind the country's rangers so they can do their job.

What a novel thing?

What I Wish Everyone Knew About Rhinos

What I Wish Everyone Knew About Rhinos | What's Happening to Africa's Rhino? | Scoop.it

The first rhinos my wife Beverly and I saw certainly impressed me. Then again, who wouldn’t be impressed by a four-ton prehistoric animal coming at you, snorting and blowing snot like a dragon with...

No creature deserves what I recently saw on film.

She was a beautiful adult female white rhino, round in just the right places, with delicate folds of grey fat and flesh — not unattractive in rhino terms — except for one blemish: her face had been hacked off. She stepped out into the road, confused and afraid and in levels of pain I cannot even imagine.

Poachers had darted her with a drug called M99, just enough to put her down, but not enough to dull any pain, and then hacked off her horns....

Agents Tackle Rhino Horn Smuggling From Miami Hotel Room

Agents Tackle Rhino Horn Smuggling From Miami Hotel Room | What's Happening to Africa's Rhino? | Scoop.it

The trafficker was pleased. He had already peddled $3 million of his illicit product and stood to make a nice profit on the deal in front of him.

The undercover agent was nervous. It had taken two years of work to reach this point. “This was an international investigation of international significance,” said agent Tim Santel. “I didn’t want him walking away.”

While the sting in a posh Miami hotel room last year had the mark of a drug probe, the smuggler wasn’t buying narcotics, and the agent didn’t work for the FBI or DEA. Zhifei Li, 29, an antiques shop owner from China, was after rhinoceros horn, worth more on Asia’s streets than gold, cocaine or heroin. And Santel is a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service....
