Less than a mile from quaint downtown Powell, the women were living in a storefront massage parlor. Not by choice, police say, but by coercion. They bathed there, cooked there and slept on massage tables that by day were used for men who expected more than a shoulder rub. As the January bust that shuttered Amsun Spa and others showed, Asian massage parlors are more than tasteless punch lines. They are real, they are here, and they are both home and prison to the women forced to work in them.
Kim Vose's insight:
This issue is one that deeply troubles me. Of course, it troubles me by how pervasive it is - there are three massage parlors within four blocks of my house - but more importantly, because of how little attention it gets when it's right out in the open. Do we not care because the women who "work" there are so often Asians? Asian women are frequently stereotyped as docile sex objects. Is that why this epidemic exists quietly in our midst?
The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse. Here’s what that means for its strategy—and for how to stop it.
Documents released last month in the settlement of a lawsuit at the University of Kansas offer a revealing window into an underreported Koch brothers' strategy: targeted, politicized funding on college campuses.
This isn't a very in-depth piece, but it's a good example of the op-ed genre, as it takes a look at an issue that many people would already be aware of, and makes a connection to an overlooked viewpoint.
Why activists are interrupting Bernie Sanders events to challenge the candidate and his supporters to keep racial justice front and center
Kim Vose's insight:
I wonder if Hillary Clinton's campaign is experiencing these interruptions, as well, or if the activists are trying to point out that even the most progressive white candidate is still out of the loop. Or, maybe Clinton's policies are more specifically trying to address race issues. I kind of doubt that, but I guess I should read her positions more closely.
Abd al-Wahhab argued that all Muslims must individually pledge their allegiance to a single Muslim leader (a Caliph, if there were one). Those who would not conform to this view should be killed, their wives and daughters violated, and their possessions confiscated, he wrote. The list of apostates meriting death included the Shia, Sufis and other Muslim denominations, whom Abd al-Wahhab did not consider to be Muslim at all. There is nothing here that separates Wahhabism from ISIS.
American politicians are now eager to disown a failed criminal-justice system that’s left the U.S. with the largest incarcerated population in the world. But they've failed to reckon with history. Fifty years after Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s report “The Negro Family” tragically helped create this system, it's time to reclaim his original intent.

Kim Vose's insight:
This article on the proposed Regent Properties development on the hillside in Ventura would be an excellent starting point for an exploration of an issue related to development, as well as an opportunity to explore who the various stakeholders are, and how being a stakeholder influences the rhetoric around the issue.
