Toyota hopes to recreate Prius success with hydrogen-powered Mirai

Toyota hopes to recreate Prius success with hydrogen-powered Mirai | Discover Sigalon Valley - Where the Tags are the Topics | Scoop.it
From the driver’s seat of the Toyota Mirai, the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell car could be a plusher and more powerful version of the Prius – if it wasn’t for the H20 button on the dash which releases a trickle of water.

Until now, car companies have been slow to bring hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to market. But Toyota is betting on the Mirai (‘future’ in Japanese) to emerge as the next generation of green car.

For that to occur, the four-seater sedan will need to replicate the success of the Prius in taking the offbeat technology of a gas-electric hybrid engine and making it middle of the road within the space of only a few years. The Prius is now the top-selling car in California.

The Mirai goes on sale in Japan in December, and in the US and Europe in the second half of 2015.

Electric Cars To Be Powered By Own Panels Using Supercapacitor Films - QUT Research

Electric Cars To Be Powered By Own Panels Using Supercapacitor Films - QUT Research | Discover Sigalon Valley - Where the Tags are the Topics | Scoop.it
If you are curious about the research in the field of electric cars, here's something to truly dazzle your brain. A team of researchers from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has achieved a breakthrough in nanotechnology that makes it possible for an electric car to be powered using its own body parts/panels. With the help of light weight super-capacitors that the team has developed and the regular batteries in-use today, the electric cars will be able to derive a significant boost in power. The researchers from QUT along with PhD scientists from Rice University in Houston, US built these super-capacitors featuring two all-carbon electrodes with electrolyte in-between them into a thin but strong high-power density film. This film could be integrated within a car's doors, floor, roof, bonnet and other body panels so as to store enough energy that can be used for turbocharging an electric car's battery in a matter of few minutes.

In order to give our future electric cars the much-need boost of extra energy for acceleration, the super-capacitor film are truly one of the best options available, thanks to its properties. The supercapacitors are an ideal complement for the mass storage batteries as they possess a limited amount of charge and are able to deliver high-output in a very short amount of time. If we compare that with a standard batteries, the supercapacitors provide considerably faster rate of acceleration and charging time for the electric cars.

Saint Cecilia's Feast Day

Saint Cecilia's Feast Day | Discover Sigalon Valley - Where the Tags are the Topics | Scoop.it
Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of the musicians and her Feast Day is celebrated on November 22. Born in 2nd Century Rome, the story says she heard heavenly music in her heart when she was married, and at the end of her short life, as she lay dying a martyr’s death, she praised God, singing to Him. It is the reason for which Christian Churches celebrate her as the patroness of musicians and Church music. John Dryden and Alexander Pope, Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel and Benjamin Britten have dedicated music and poems to Saint Cecilia, and their works were presented in musical concerts and festivals held on her Feast Day.

Here, in chronological order, are Musk’s own tweets describing the tech, which, also includes an autonomous seafaring drone spaceport platform, to give them a landing pad that can hold its position within three meters’ distance even in the heart of a raging storm.

One of the (few) advantages of being in technology for a long time is that you get to see multiple tech cycles beginning to end. You get to see how breakthroughs actually propagate. If all you have seen is a part of the curve, it’s hard to extrapolate correctly. You either overshoot the short-term progress or undershoot the long. What’s surprising is not how quickly the facts on the ground change, but how slowly engineering practice changes in response. This is a Strowger switch, an automated way to connect phone circuits. It was invented in 1891.

Automated Reasoning (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

Reasoning is the ability to make inferences, and automated reasoning is concerned with the building of computing systems that automate this process. Although the overall goal is to mechanize different forms of reasoning, the term has largely been identified with valid deductive reasoning as practiced in mathematics and formal logic. In this respect, automated reasoning is akin to mechanical theorem proving. Building an automated reasoning program means providing an algorithmic description to a formal calculus so that it can be implemented on a computer to prove theorems of the calculus in an efficient manner. Important aspects of this exercise involve defining the class of problems the program will be required to solve, deciding what language will be used by the program to represent the information given to it as well as new information inferred by the program, specifying the mechanism that the program will use to conduct deductive inferences, and figuring out how to perform all these computations efficiently. While basic research work continues in order to provide the necessary theoretical framework, the field has reached a point where automated reasoning programs are being used by researchers to attack open questions in mathematics and logic, and to solve problems in engineering.

La France est officiellement entrée en déflation

La France est officiellement entrée en déflation | Discover Sigalon Valley - Where the Tags are the Topics | Scoop.it
Le 13 novembre, l’INSEE publiait les dernières données relatives à l’évolution des prix pour le mois d’octobre 2014 : « Les prix à la consommation sont stables en octobre 2014 ; ils augmentent de 0.5% sur un an ». A priori, rien d’alarmant.
