Get them to read online! Some of the sites have app :)

alistairm 's curator insight, February 1, 2013 3:47 AM

A great way to get into using ebooks is to start with some of the free varieties. Ebook readers offer all kinds of accessibility benefits - as well as barriers - and trialling with free books is a good way to experiment with what works for you or your learners.

Lukas Palecek's curator insight, February 9, 2013 5:52 AM

A nice start if you are after some free stuff for your reader.

It only makes sense doesn't it?

What if this was adapted ever so slightly so that it would fit on 3M 3 1/3 x 4 inch permanent Adhesive shipping labels (same size as Avery 8164 / 5164 labels) and laid out in a pdf so 6 could be printed on a shingle sheet?

Where might these stickers or labels be placed to get the greatest bang for the buck with both students and parents?

And don't miss the Teachers and Technology graphics a bit lower on the same page.

DyslexicIT's insight:

This is an easy way to add audio to a document. This could be used by people who have difficulty reading the text. this way the person can choose which method is more accessible for them. Great for the classroom to increase engagement and it requires only a few seconds to create a file using WordTalk ( Google that) and embed it into the document.

This may also be a very useful addition to home school communications via email.

Oxford Owl: Help your child’s reading with free tips, phonics support, free ebooks, and the latest reading news. All from Oxford University Press.
DyslexicIT's insight:

This is an excellent site for introducing parents how to help their children access text. It has a number of inter active books which have relevant activities that help with phonics grammar and comprehension and is closely linked to the oxford reading scheme.

The site uses Flash so using a tablet is out of the question which is a downfall especially as Flash is starting to be phased out - let’s hope they update their resources to work with tablets.

Will School Printers Soon Be A Thing Of The Past?

Will School Printers Soon Be A Thing Of The Past? | What is Hot in Education | Scoop.it
Students, teachers, and administrators are some of the biggest users of school printers I know of. As someone who tries to avoid printers at all costs, it's painfully obvious when I have to use one.

DyslexicIT's insight:

Paper is becoming a medium that is being used less and less in the working world but this still has not filtered into school. There are some schools out there that have moved to electronic paperless medium for documents and they reported saving £60 000 in one year on photocopying. With budget cut throughout education it makes sense.
