Cheung Morris's insight:

OEM is the abbreviation of Original Equipment Manufacturer. It implies that the company can buy the product and incorporate or rebrand it into a new product under its own name.In other words the OEM will closely work with the company that sells their own product. As these parts are readily available, the company is not required to setup any manufacturing unit or factory in order to make these parts. These people are expert in making these parts and hence, you won’t find any issue with the ready parts available with them.

ODM is the abbreviation of Original Design Manufacturer, which means it designs and manufactures a product that is eventually branded in the name of another company for sale. But this doesn’t mean that it’s a brand. This helps the company for not investing in manufacturing plant or factory or even engaging themselves in the organizational activities. ODM are usually helpful in international trade as they provide advantage to the foreign company with low labor inputs, transport link or proximity to markets. In other words, it’s a part of outsourcing. The product can also be customized as per the needs of the customers.

So what is the difference between the two?

The difference between the two is that the OEM will design their product as per their own specification and then sell it to the other company, which will distribute it or rebrand it while ODM will design and build a product as per another company’s specifications.

More bandwidth would be great. Improved HDCP fault tolerance would be even better.

In most case scenarios, this is actually convenient as you don’t have to meddle with the device every time you switch on your TV.
