Luigi Cappel's curator insight, October 29, 2015 2:42 PM

Do you ever find yourself apologizing or feeling like you have to defend the business time you spend focused on  social media?

There are people who still think Twitter is there for people who want to tell each other that they just had a coffee and Facebook to show people your coffee with the cute milky swirl silver fern or love heart so that people can 'Like' it. You know them, they are the ones around the ever shrinking magazine rack at the book store.

3.2 Billion people must know a little better wouldn't you think? There is still a place for printed media. I enjoy reading a printed newspaper once a week or so, I really do. I enjoy  trade or special interest publications for business and leisure.

However, if I want to target a segment of people in a community, whether that is an interest or knowledge community or people who live in a particular town, work in a particular part of the city, are traveling to a particular concert or sporting match, or whatever level of demographic I want to target, I can't go past social media.

The funny thing is the people who criticize social media as a business or communications tool sometimes make me feel I have to defend my marketing spend, when it is such a small fraction of what it costs to advertise in other media such as print or broadcast in terms of reach.

I have a particular type of marketing need, it is very time based, its half life is measured in minutes, not days or weeks. Social media works for that and I am hardly touching the surface of its capability. This Infographic makes really interesting reading. Have another look and remind yourself, this is only over a period of 1 minute! Do some testing and see what sort of comparative reach or CPC you can get. Starting with free which is pretty good value, right. OK you still have to pay someone to create and publish it, but I used to pay $2-4,000 for a full page ad in a magazine and I still had to pay staff or agents to create copy, source or create graphics, creative for the ad, proofing and more. Plus I couldn't measure reach or engagement beyond the claims of the publisher.

Do you tell your stories or share information via social media? Do you have critics? How do you show them the value?

Why Your Brain Loves Good Storytelling | What about? What's up? Qué pasa? | Scoop.it

"Many business people have already discovered the power of storytelling in a practical sense – they have observed how compelling a well-constructed narrative can be. But recent scientific work is putting a much finer point on just how stories change our attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors."

China to end one-child policy

China to end one-child policy | What about? What's up? Qué pasa? | Scoop.it

"All couples will now be allowed to have two children, the state-run news agency said, citing a statement from the Communist Party. The controversial policy was introduced nationally in 1979, to reduce the country's birth rate and slow the population growth rate. However, concerns at China's aging population led to pressure for change."

Mark Hathaway's curator insight, November 24, 2015 6:58 AM

Chinas change in policy can be directly attributed to the need of unskilled labor. China has become an economic superpower, by exploiting its vast resources of labor. For decades, China has had a vast reservoir of cheap labor to rely on. In recent years, that vast reservoir has begun to run dry. This new phenomenon can be traced to the governments one child policy.  The lack of multiple new births has lead to an older population. An older population can provide the type of manual labor, that China needs to compete in the global market. The government  hopes to revesre the aging trend by ending this policy. If successful, China would likely see another era of great growth within its economy.

Gene Gagne's curator insight, December 1, 2015 7:37 PM

Lets not forget the expansion of china also with its economic strength and its military strength which is a threat to other countries in the area because china can take control and with Chinese moving into Africa and United states as residents china is going to need to populate its own country.

Adam Deneault's curator insight, December 14, 2015 8:55 PM

First implemented in 1979 and diminished in 2013 It is good to hear something like this has finally come to an end. Although it deemed successful by stopping the birth of an estimated 400 million babies, there were some places that allowed two children in rural areas if the first was a girl. It is assumed though that even though this is no longer a required policy, many couples may only have one child since it is accepted as a social norm.

Topographic Light Painting Maps Rooms and People in 3-D

Topographic Light Painting Maps Rooms and People in 3-D | What about? What's up? Qué pasa? | Scoop.it

Posted by Jakob Schiller on August 24, 2012. Photo by Janne Parviainen

"For years Janne Parviainen worked as a painter, happy with two-dimensions, until he came across light painting photography. He realized the technique could bring out that third, illusive dimension of depth in a way paint and canvas could not.

“It was a whole new challenge,” says Parviainen, 32, who lives in Helsinki, Finland.

His topographic light paintings circumscribe surfaces and people throughout his house, creating captivating 3-D models in the process. Parviainen first started in 2007 by using small LED lights to trace human bodies, using his wife and himself for models. He quickly grew more ambitious, creating multi-person shots where he would trace himself multiple times, creating the appearance of an entire audience.

“When I started tracing rooms I was like ‘this is totally mad, it’s going to take forever,’” Parviainen says. “The first one took 33 minutes and I was soaking wet [from sweat] when it was done.”

Light painting, the act of tracing shapes or designs with a light-source during a long camera exposure, is nothing new, of course. Picasso dabbled in it and today people are using light painting in increasingly inventive ways."

In 1700, Japan was hit by a tsunami; they knew that tsunamis were caused by earthquakes, but there was no earthquake of that magnitude in Japan that could have caused it.  They called it the Orphan Tsunami, and it puzzled everyone.  Centuries later, data confirmed that a massive earthquake in the Pacific Northwest occurred in 1700 and it's tsunami traveled across the ocean much like the this computer simulation of the 1960 Chile earthquake.
