The Trouble with Testing | DMLcentral

The Trouble with Testing | DMLcentral | Wepyirang | Scoop.it

Learning research consistently shows that an emphasis on test scores does not necessarily lead to gains in academic performance. Perhaps learning, with its long-term gains and diffuse experiences does not lend itself well to an economic model. Instead of focusing on test scores at the elementary and secondary levels, why not take a longer-term view? Why public education? What are our true goals for teaching and learning? When pressed, most politicians will state that the long-term goals of education are to develop a citizenry that maximizes contributions to society and economy; yet, our standard test measures typically seem unrelated to the higher-order qualities that lead to such engaged citizens.

This article makes some good and concise points against standardized testing, but it doesn't really say anything we don't think already.  What we really need now are new evaluation and assessment tools based on updated goals for education.

I appreciated the mention that despite ranking in the middle on PISA tests, the USA continues to rank highly in global innovation. What exactly are we trying to measure again ;P ?

2013's Complex Social Media Landscape in One Chart

2013's Complex Social Media Landscape in One Chart | Wepyirang | Scoop.it

When Brian Solis introduced the first Conversation Prism in 2008, the world was a seemingly simpler place. There were 22 social media categories, each of which had just a handful of brands.

Flash forward to 2013, and the latest Conversation Prism has four additional categories with at least six brands in each. Like other Conversation Prisms, the data visualization attempts to illustrate the array of social media choices available to marketers.

While the 2008 chart looked like a flower, the latest one resembles a kaleidoscope. Solis, a prominent social media marketing expert, says redoing the chart this time around has been instructive. "Things are changing so fast," he says. "We don't even realize [the landscape] is shifting."

The chart also points out that, for many, membership in the social media ecosystem is fleeting. While some brands like Xanga, Kyte and Utterz have disappeared, others that weren't around five years ago — like Path and Banjo — are now among category leaders.

Denis Lundie's curator insight, July 8, 2013 5:23 AM

Social media, as expected, are proliferating and also being embedded in collaboration applications. They can be public or private. Different social media appeal to different segments of the population for different reasons. Individuals can, and do, join different social networks for different interests or relationships in their lives. Finally, they are quite simply applications, with different functionality, will behave differently.

Much has been made in media and education circles of Facebook and Twitter, ranging from the inherent dangers to teaching by means of these, and how to integrate them into education. Policies have been developed around them. This picture should dispel the hype surrounding the most obvious social networks, as unique threats or opportunities, for learning.

IT strategies and policies should not developed around individual applications, especially not social networks. e-Safety education especially, should focus on responsible management of privacy, irrespective the medium. Teaching & learning opportunities should be sought in social media that are built for learning, or embedded in rapidly evolving learning applications.

These stats alone are clear enough that UX (User Experience) isn’t something that can be taken lightly. The life and blood of your business might very well depend on this factor alone.

An astounding 80 percent of the world’s population now has a mobile phone—and 84 percent is unwilling to go a single day without their phone. About 45 percent of Americans say they can’t go more than a few hours without checking their phones. In 2012 there were five billion mobile phones in the world—1.8 billion of these were smart phones.

Facebook now reaches 76 percent of the smartphone market, and it accounts for 23 percent of total time spent using apps each month.

The next five most used applications are Google apps, and they account for 10 percent of app usage time. One of the latest smartphone trends is that things are getting less touchy but more sensitive. Gestures and other non-tap inputs are on the rise. Casting a sidelong glance, for example, can pause a video. Some apps are being developed that will switch from manual to voice to text to gesture, depending on what you are doing...

I've heard everyone from Jaron Lanier to Tim Berners-Lee and a number of other noteworthy tech brains bring up this topic up. How do the creators of content and innovative ideas cash in on the contributions they have made that everyone is passing along and sharing? No one wants their work and thoughts stolen and most everyone I know wants creative people to keep creating what we need and want and would like them rewarded and to be able to earn a decent living doing that. This article is about how we can make sure that happens.

Similarly, teachers can leave audio feedback for students who benefit from hearing input multiple times. With the built-in camera, students can quickly snap pictures of class notes on a board, or record a quick video of teacher instruction. Leveraging just these few features has the potential to personalize learning and differentiate instruction where it might otherwise be impossible.

Marco Gabrielli's curator insight, August 13, 2013 8:30 AM

Il poster evidenzia gli argomenti chiave, necessari per sviluppare differenti forme di storytelling. I tre elementi principali sono:

1) la definizione di sette popolari tipi di trame (la vittoria sul mostro, diventare ricchissimi, la traversata del deserto, nuova consapevolezza, commedia, tragedia, rinascita) ;

2) l'identificazione di sette tipi di eroi presenti nelle diverse trame (Dracula, Cenerentola, Ulisse, Alice, Aristofane, Macbeth, A Christmas Carol);
