Women changing the face of science: Cathy Foley › Science Features (ABC Science)

Women changing the face of science: Cathy Foley › Science Features (ABC Science) | Well Loved Woman | Scoop.it

It has been my own experience that the problems that intrigue women about the natural world are not always exactly the same as those that attract men. By encouraging women to embrace science, we likely increase the range of problems under study, and this will broaden and strengthen the entire enterprise.

Lisa Hall | President & CEO of Calvert Foundation | Investing in Women is Smart Economics

Lisa Hall | President & CEO of Calvert Foundation | Investing in Women is Smart Economics | Well Loved Woman | Scoop.it

At Calvert Foundation, investors purchase Community Investment Notes in amounts as small as $20, and Calvert Foundation then lends that money to qualified organizations working to build and revitalize communities in the U.S. and around the world.

CEO Lisa Hall uses her work at Calvert Foundation to empower women-centered businessess and organizations through the Women INvesting in Women INitiative (WIN-WIN).

"We shift from “women’s rights are human rights” to “investing in women is smart economics"."Women’s rights and women’s equality are symptom of economic injustice, which is the real disease. People have looked closely to see, wait a minute, these things are completely related and you’re never going to get the full equality for women if you don’t get economic justice for women."

The Kravis Leadership Institute is conducting a survey of women to measure information about work/life balance, leadership, stress levels and life stages. I just finished taking the survey and it does take a little time – there are several pages.

The Complexity of the Creative Personality

Creativity researcher Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi describes the diversity and complexity of creative people: “If there is one word that makes creative people different from others, it is the word complexity. Instead of being an individual, they are a multitude.”

“Like the color white that includes all colors, they tend to bring together the entire range of human possibilities within themselves. Creativity allows for paradox, light, shadow, inconsistency, even chaos – and creative people experience both extremes with equal intensity.”

On Love and Loss

On Love and Loss | Well Loved Woman | Scoop.it

Here is a beautiful and bittersweet poem by Veronica Shoffstall entitled "After A While" - a fine counterpart to Susan Sontag's collected learnings on love.

After A While

After a while you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,

And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security.

And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises,

And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head up and your eyes open
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child,

And you learn to build all your roads on today
Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans
And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while you learn...
That even sunshine burns if you get too much.

So you plant your garden and decorate your own soul,
Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure...

That you really are strong

And you really do have worth...

And you learn and learn...

With every good-bye you learn.
