Women 2.0 – Founding Startups » Solo Founder Takes the Long Way with Accompl.sh | Well Loved Woman | Scoop.it

Women startups in any industry may not be easy to get off the ground if working the solo entrepreneur angle. Jenn Vargas shares her experience taking a project to full website and calling it a startup. A few lessons I know all too well myself, such as build something for people to use, but they may not use it that way you expected. Jenn has a cool product we ALL could use for productivity and reaching our goals. -- @Nakeva

"I’m about 18 months into the journey of taking Accompl.sh (formerly 101in365) from a little weekend project to automate my own annual goal tracking to a living, breathing web application.

Taking the “long way” of being a solo founder, I found working on Accompl.sh as a side project has been a crash course in time management, community building, product development, design, coding, you name it. But the most difficult part of all has been making the big decisions about the direction of the project itself..." - Jenn Vargas

AboutOne CEO, Joanne Lang, was listed by Forbes as one of Ten Female Entreprenuers And Mompreneurs To Watch in March 2011. Women building strong businesses and acquiring funding is no easy task as most funding goes to men. I tend to believe its not a biased perspective, its about women accepting the challenges of applying for funding. The new service from AboutOne, AcornPoints, will add to family content organization and includes photo storage.

Congratulations to AboutOne!

Stilettos Invade Startups as Niche-Shopping Sites Attract Women | Well Loved Woman | Scoop.it

Alexis Maybank, co-founder of the shopping website Gilt Groupe Inc., says her 5-inch stilettos are meant to send a message: being feminine and starting a technology company aren’t mutually exclusive.

“Women are driving most of the consumer activity on the Web today,” said Aileen Lee, a venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, who devotes about half of her investment portfolio to startups founded by females.

“I can’t relate to Mark Zuckerberg, and I can’t relate to Steve Jobs,” she said, referring to the co-founders and CEOs of Facebook Inc. and Apple Inc, respectively. “Having a community where people look like you -- seeing other role models implicitly tells someone they can do it.”

Jacqueline Baptist was amazed at how rarely the media tells stories of women entrepreneurs. As a result, she has decided to take matters into her own hands and.

A great resource to tell stories of women owned businesses and what they do to achieve success or manage failures. You read stories about women entrepreneurs from various columns, blogs or magazine sections. However, getting the real story and talking to real women could be a better resource when there is no other way to connect or network in person. - Nakeva

More on She Means Business:

"The documentary will explore the key issues women entrepreneurs face such as similarities/differences in female-led versus male-led companies; women’s access to capital and entrepreneur training/business skills; and successes and strategies of woman-led businesses.

She Means Business will share true, honest portrayals of human experience, focusing on four to six early-stage and/or transitioning woman-owned businesses, following their successes, failures, struggles, concerns, disasters, and miracles." - Stacie Woods, Small Business Trends
