Iain Duncan Smith's Department for Work and Pensions has nearly two-thirds of government workers on less than the living wage of £7.65 per hour, according to figures obtained by Labour MP Frank Field. Field called on Duncan Smith to act after finding out through parliamentary questions that almost 5,000 of the 7,500 government workers earning less than the living wage were working by the DWP - 286 directly and 4,500 through external contractors.

The UK is in danger of standards of nutrition regressing decades and undoing the advances made since World War Two, a coalition of 170 public health experts has warned. Food poverty in the world's sixth largest economy should be unacceptable, and the government is doing little to solve it, the academics and practitioners from the UK Faculty of Public Health said in a letter to the Lancet, a prestigious medical health journal.

Labour supports an overall cap on benefits spending, but that means tackling the root causes of poverty among disabled people - low employment and the failure of government employment programmes such as the Work Programme to help them into jobs, rising living costs and the squeeze on family finances, and the pressures on public services that prevent them from participating fully in society. These pressures help create a vicious circle that means poverty and disability are mutually reinforcing. Labour is determined to break that link.
