Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, July 29, 2013 11:41 PM

Too few people in the states that have either rejected PARCC or those staying strong is field testing PARCC items know what PARCC is...in my workshops, I find that most teachers do not know if they are in a PARCC or an SBAC state. Whose responsible to share that information?

What can I say...yes, I believe these planners are dynamic means by which teachers can still control what happens in their classroom while students are preparing not only for assessment but also for the cognitive skills that life beyond school demands. You be the judge. But be warned, you need some knowledge of the standards. These planners do not do all the work, rather, they provide a foundation for professional decisions.

Media literacy helps youth make better decisions.

Media literacy helps youth make better decisions. | Common Core Resources for ELA Teachers | Scoop.it

In the United States, there has been increased momentum to include media literacy skills within state curriculum frameworks. Secondary English language arts textbooks now generally include the formal study of advertising, news, and some film and television genres. More than 40 states including Massachusetts, North Carolina, and New Mexico have identified media literacy skills within language arts, social studies, fine and performing arts, library information skills, or health education curricula. The State of Pennsylvania includes media literacy standards in Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, Health, Safety and Physical Education, and the Arts and Humanities.

Learners Should Be Developing Their Own Essential Questions

Learners Should Be Developing Their Own Essential Questions | Common Core Resources for ELA Teachers | Scoop.it

"Having essential questions drive curriculum and learning has become core to many educators' instructional practices.  Grant Wiggins, in his work on Understanding By Design, describes an essential quetion as:

A meaning of “essential” involves important questions that recur throughout one’s life. Such questions are broad in scope and timeless by nature. They are perpetually arguable – What is justice?  Is art a matter of taste or principles? How far should we tamper with our own biology and chemistry?  Is science compatible with religion? Is an author’s view privileged in determining the meaning of a text? We may arrive at or be helped to grasp understandings for these questions, but we soon learn that answers to them are invariably provisional..."

Patrice Bucci's curator insight, September 29, 2013 7:00 PM

So true... I cringe when I am in classrooms with the packaged program "essential question" of the week on the board...and very often those "essential questions" lack cognitive clarity for the students

Mary Reilley Clark's curator insight, January 8, 2014 1:33 PM

A great summary of why questioning still matters.  We've been talking about metacognition a lot this year in the library.  Learning how to develop questions is a large part of learning how you learn and think.

Stacey Jackowski's curator insight, February 19, 2014 8:20 PM

This quote is so true.  Learning how to ask essential questions is a skill that we can carry with us for the rest of our lives and facilitates a lifetime of learning.

This video would be great for professional development. It's short enough to share during an hour long PD session, leaving time to discuss and create ideas for implementing in the classroom.

Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, January 9, 2014 9:55 AM

So many good videos on this website. This lesson reminded me of one I typcially taught as my students moved into analytic literary research. Like Wessling, I would work with students to generate a list of all the aspects within a piece of literature that one could analyze throughout the text. And the, I would ask them to choose two or three and explore not only how they found the aspects interacting, but what literary critics before them said about the text's development in those areas.

Nalya Ovshieva's curator insight, October 25, 2014 4:48 PM

A great way of thinking - looking for concrete and conceptual patterns, and then draw conclusions..
