In all new technology, a successful implementation in the organization is the key ingredient to success.  A poor implementation does not mean the technology doesn't work.  A systems approach, with many adjustments for why "something failed" or didn't in all cases, will help to fine tune implementations.  Root cause analysis is key to avoiding reacting only to symptoms.  To do this type of analysis during and after implementation requires resources and leadership at the top.

This is a very controversial issue within our school district between the district and parents.  I hope this article will help our parents and staff have a better understanding of what blended learning incorporates into the classroom.

Sofia Sweeney's curator insight, November 24, 2015 6:39 PM

How to Grow a Classroom Culture That Supports Blended Learning - Mind/Shift

How to Grow a Classroom Culture That Supports Blended Learning - Mind/Shift | Websites for Blended EFL | Scoop.it

"It all started in 1987, when I got a grant from the State of California. The state sent me eight Macintosh computers, never asking if I knew how to use them, and when they arrived I had no idea how to even turn them on. I realized then that I was going to fail if I didn’t get some help quickly. I looked around for colleagues who could help, but none of them had any idea. Our school had no IT department. So I took a leap of faith and confessed to my students that I had no idea how to use the new computers and that I needed help. This turned out to be a stroke of good luck, even though I did not see it that way at the time. It was the beginning of my new teaching methodology."

Linda Buckmaster's curator insight, November 6, 2015 4:15 PM

Dr. Reshan Richards discusses the use of Explain Everything & iPads to build a Qualitative Formative Assessment Toolkit.  He has recently written about the qualitative formative assessment toolkit (QFAT for short) which is something that has come out of his research on and practice with mobile devices, multimedia, and formative assessment. It is comprised of four media authoring approaches available on most smartphones, tablets, and laptops: making photos, taking screenshots, filming videos, and screencasting.

Each of these approaches allow teachers and learner to capture and create moments of learning, excerpts of understanding, and reflections of experience.

The basic cognitive skills needed by previous generations are no longer enough. Students in the conceptual age must also master the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, including creation, metacognition and self-actualization.

“It will require an upgrade to our curriculum, new instructional methods and materials, a new profile of a global graduate and an open mind,” say Smith, Chavez and Seaman.

For ideas about how to re-create your classroom for the conceptual age, including potential classroom setups, blended learning models to mix and match, and a curriculum design process, take a look at the infographic
