How Much Damage is Your Website Doing to Your Business?

How Much Damage is Your Website Doing to Your Business? | WebsiteDesign | Scoop.it
Let's try and fix how the poor design, usability or content of your website is driving visitors to your site away in seconds ?

Via Martin (Marty) Smith
Brian Yanish - MarketingHits.com's insight:

Marty that is so right, just because you hit the "go live" button doesn't mean that you are done. Unfortunately many website owners stop there. The reasons can be for a number of things, lack of budget, of knowledge, or just simply thinking it's done.

A great marketing company well watch the analytics and trends on the site (good or bad) and make suggestions to their clients.

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, March 12, 2013 8:11 AM

Great piece about BOUNCE RATES and how to structure content to bring them down. Also great general idea - that having a website does not equal benefiting from the site. When the clueless create websites they can do more damage than good via bad tagging, poor meta data (especially titles) and bad structure producing high bounce rates and so never earning Google's trust.

Don't think just because you finally got that website up it is doing you any GOOD (lol). Internet marketing requires a PRO to advise you at some point otherwise you fly the plain into the mountain and feel good about it all the way in.

Below the Fold: Adventures in Choosing your Own Template

Below the Fold: Adventures in Choosing your Own Template | WebsiteDesign | Scoop.it
Several years ago, when people were still figuring out how the Internet was going to be used with a variety of devices, the term “the Fold” was born. The fold is a term that was borrowed from print advertising to describe the portion of your Internet screen that you can read without doing any scrolling. Obviously, the fold on a large desktop replacement is going to be far bigger than one on an iPhone 6.

Part of the discussion about the fold is if it is a good idea for you to put content or designs below it. One school of thought was that you needed to put your information above the fold because of the “5 second rule” according to Web Design Tutsplus.com. This rule states that you have 5 seconds to grab a reader’s attention. If you do not grab a reader then, you lose them.

The Use of Filters and Transparency Layers in Website Design

The Use of Filters and Transparency Layers in Website Design | WebsiteDesign | Scoop.it
It seems that with one trend in website design, designers almost have another trend pushed upon them. This is the case with large background images – using a slide show with a variety of different photographs means that whatever color text you choose it will show up better on some than on others, so the solution has been to place a filter or transparent layer between the image and the text, meaning that the text will show just as clearly on any image.

This design trend does not only apply to photographic background images, some sites use halftones or transparency on solid color backgrounds, and the addition of a very small drop shadow makes white text look extremely crisp and sharp. Here we are showcasing a selection of websites that use this method to keep their text easy to read without compromising the quality of the images.

30 Examples of Website Search Interface Design

30 Examples of Website Search Interface Design | WebsiteDesign | Scoop.it
Not many designers place enough focus on the benefits of creative search fields. For content-heavy websites most users will be prepared to search for what they’re looking for. If the search interface sucks then people will be forced to leave and hit Google, or worse… Ask Jeeves.

Instead of driving people away like a repugnant foul pot roast, why not spice up the design and give it some flavor? Then everyone will simply adore the pot roast! In this analogy the pot roast is a stinky search input field that just needs a little TLC.

Parallax Web Design: What It Is and How It Can Affect Your SEO #websitedesign #seo

Parallax Web Design: What It Is and How It Can Affect Your SEO #websitedesign #seo | WebsiteDesign | Scoop.it

Digest...

Parallax design sites are growing in use because they embrace the fluidity of the Web, provide simplicity, and offer a scrolling technique that creates a neat 3-D effect.

You should be aware of some concerns when deciding whether to use a parallax design. Concerns include the following.

Load times

Parallax design is highly animated with a lot of scripts, so it can decrease the load time of a website.

Browser support

Not all browsers are able to support the parallax design. That inability can lead to problems for the user.

Not mobile-friendly

Parallax scrolling is also not ideal for mobile as it makes the website bloated. Parallax adds layers of code to a website.

Deficient for analytics

If all your content is on one page, understanding what content is capturing visitors can be difficult. There can be workarounds to this obstacle, such as using event tracking or tying a pageview in Google Analytics to sections of parallax scrolling, but parallax design does add a layer of complexity to analytics.

SEO

SEO and new design techniques often don't mesh. In addition to being deficient on the analytics side, many parallax websites are not built with SEO in mind. Content often takes a backseat to the visual, and parallax pages typically aren't geared towards specific topics and targeted websites. External websites may only have one page to link without linking to specific subpage with more relevant content.

Avoid like the plague.

Don Hileman's curator insight, October 19, 11:08 PM

Parallax websites look amazing, but are they effective for SEO?

Well that depends. There are several things such as Page Title, Page Description, and Content that plays a major role in SEO. Parallax designs can still include great content which is one of the most important things when it comes to SEO.

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, October 21, 9:44 AM

I used this phrase in a meeting last year and got laughed at. Parallax is mobile friendly so a trending design ethos.

Mobile and Tablet Growth Demands Web Solution #responsivedesign

Mobile and Tablet Growth Demands Web Solution #responsivedesign | WebsiteDesign | Scoop.it
Screens are getting smaller….and bigger…and we simply have more of them!

The use of the Internet has evolved quickly in the past few years!  Gone are the days of only large desktop computers as primary methods to use the Internet.  PewResearch outlined 2014 stats on the use of mobile devices and tablets, and the data was amazing!

The Mobile and Tablet Growth Demands a Web Solution!

Mobile Stats: As of January 2014

90% of American adults have a cell phone
58% of American adults have a smartphone
42% of American adults own a tablet computer
32% of American adults own an e-reader
It’s no wonder then that one of the fastest growing areas of web development is mobile and tablet friendly websites.  These websites are called “Responsive sites” because they “respond” to the device size of the web visitor, giving them a great experience for their device.  This means no more squinting to view details on a site for a mobile user, and a great view on tablets such as the iPad or Android tablets.
