By doing so, they are getting a better understanding of their customers as well as the online conversation around their brand. But, In most cases, there’s an alarming disconnect between who the brand thinks its customers are, and vice-versa. Usually, this disconnect is because the brand and customer have no real interaction with each other.

I usually start out w/ clients with the analogy that Social Media should be treated re communication such as their phone or email while that conversation is public knowledge such as a bill board or magazine ad. It is scary for some but as you stated it is vital to know what consumers are saying!

This type of communication takes a long time for more established business owners to adjust too and adopt! It's so counter intuitive to what they have ever done. The Gen X & Y business owners totally get it - yet you'll be hard pressed to find them in the same business model as this older generation. That's why Erik Qualman said "The ROI of Social Media is that you'll still be in business in five years."

My take is that Twitter is a better delivery mechanism for instantaneous news. It's broader global focus makes it more effective in newsgathering than Facebook which is locally focused (makes sense that more of your friends are typically in the area).

This is why I keep harping on educators to join Twitter--it's function let's it occupy a different ecological niche than Facebook.  This function is towards professional and personal interests, and not based on who you already know.  In other words, you can absolutely be a professional on Twitter and get a professional network that will help facilitate your growth.
