The UX of Data - Mind in OpenData

The UX of Data - Mind in OpenData | Web UX | Scoop.it
In my previous article, The Coming Zombie Apocalypse, I discussed how small, cheap, web-connected devices are overturning our old-school assumptions about devices and applications.

I assume most readers are familiar with the concept of cloud computing, but it's a very broad concept encompassing a wide range of technologies.

This article will focus on a core aspect, the storage of a user's data outside of their personal devices. This is a very disruptive shift that enables user experiences that would be impossible with only local storage, and creates a new facet of design: the UX of data.

Building Interactive Html Prototypes - UX Movement

Building Interactive Html Prototypes - UX Movement | Web UX | Scoop.it
If you design desktop or mobile user interfaces, you know how valuable it is to get a prototype out there for feedback. Designing highly interactive user interfaces today requires a tool that shows how a prototype looks and behaves. With such a tool, you would no longer be limited to just a static image. You would be able to view and test the prototype in any browser and interact with it.

This is beyond mere response to user needs and to offer a true experience.

Since everything is a source of creativity, inspiration can be extended outside the context of the industry.

Thus, brainstorming is relevant when varying vantage points and generating fresh ideas.

It requires a multidisciplinary team that blends business, talents and energies.

A website has everything to offer optimal service: open 24 out of 24 visitors are expected to easily find what they want...

Anyone's dreaming of this Web. Yet in reality, we are still far off.

Without words, any Web interface, Internet site or other online media would be an inert body.

Make less more

Make less more | Web UX | Scoop.it
What if instead of adding new features, a company concentrated on making the service or product much easier to use?

Or making it much easier to access the advanced features it already has, but that few can master?

Maybe what they lose in market share in one area will be more than compensated for in another area. In a lot of markets, it’s gotten so bad out there that simply being usable is enough to make a product truly remarkable.”

Chart junk isn't as bad as you think

Chart junk isn't as bad as you think | Web UX | Scoop.it
As you create charts and graphs, you are telling a story. You are imposing your bias and view as a designer onto the data. It is best if you can do it in an independent manner, to let the data shine through, but this isn’t always possible.

Understanding the journey

Understanding the journey | Web UX | Scoop.it
How you arrive somewhere is almost as important as where you were going in the first place.

It doesn’t matter if it is a website, a boutique clothing store or a diner somewhere in middle America—humans are strongly affected by our surroundings and, for better or for worse, create an emotional connection to the destination based on the journey which brought them there in the first place.

Constraints drive creativity.

Constraints drive creativity. | Web UX | Scoop.it
While I like to think that on our very best days designers might actually reach enlightenment, I think the answer is more simple than that. I think that constraints (real constraints) force us to cut things out of our design.
