Games are being used much more widely in schools than they were when I first started writing about them 2 or 3 years ago. As of fall 2013, 74% of K-8 teachers were using digital games. 55% of these teachers have students playing digital games at least weekly, 9% daily. The games they are using are mostly designed to be educational, with only 5% playing commercial games, and 8% playing hybrids (commercial games adapted for education like MincraftEDU or SimCityEdu).
These insights come from Joan Ganz Cooney Center at the Sesame Workshop, who recently released a study surveying K-8 teachers in order to understand how they are implementing digital games in their classrooms.
One of the take aways from the Curriculum Mapping Institute this past week was that it brought an upgrade to THE trusted KWL (Know, What to Know and Learned) Chart to the forefront. It seems a no brainer…one of those things… “I should have thought about it”… So what is this upgrade all about?

To think they used to say that one couldn’t do real work or create content on the iPad… Enter Weebly for iPad, a native application by the popular web-hosting service which allows users to create websites in minutes by dragging and dropping various elements in its web interface.
Although it’s been available on iOS since May 2012, Weebly was iPhone-only until todays update which has brought out native iPad interface with full editing capabilities, unlike the iPhone and iPod touch version.
Bloom's Taxonomy Tools is a Google document created by NJ superintendent Scott Rocco and it features a list of 89 web tools and mobile apps that correspond with every thinking level of Bloom's taxonomy. This work is a collective effort from different teachers and educators who have come together and crowdsourced ideas and tools to help teachers make the best of Bloom's digital taxonomy in their instruction. As you can see below, the document features five columns: one for the name of the app, the other specifies the level of Bloom's taxonomy the app addresses, the third column is for links of the apps, the fourth is on what the app does and the last one captures some ideas on how the app can be used. Yes this is a personal view and I know there are tons of other apps out there that can be used for this purpose, but from my own experience of app reviewing and based on my actual use , the apps I have handpicked for you have all the features you need to create a powerful and visually appealing presentation.
