Designing problem-based learning in virtual learning environments

In recent years Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) or Learning Management Systems (LMS) have been widely adopted within Higher Education and other educational domains. However, it seems that these widespread changes have had more effect on administrative practices than on fundamentally reshapingpedagogy. Many proponents of technology- enhanced learning (including myself) view technologies as vehicles or opportunities for reshaping existing pedagogies, typically toward more active, student-centred,dialogical, collaborative, and knowledge-creating modes of learning. However, the pedagogical realities of VLE implementation seem to include less radical pedagogical changes. Often VLEs become more or less static repositories containing course descriptions, curricula, readings, lecture notes, and slides with only little interaction, collaboration, and critical dialogue.

Karen Bonanno's insight:

The importance of student-owned and controlled Personal Learning Environments that reflect the progress of a student's learning is the focus of this paper.

A Quick Guide to Using Diigo with Your Students

A Quick Guide to Using Diigo with Your Students | Web tools to support inquiry based learning | Scoop.it

Social bookmarking is an online phenomenon that has seen the light in the last few years particularly with the outburst of web 2.0 technologies or what author Will Richardson calls the read/write web. To put it simply, a social bookmarking service is a web tool that allows you to not only bookmark web documents (as traditional bookmarking did) but also to annotate, edit, tag and share them with others. Social bookmarking can also be a collaborative endeavour in which a group of users share links with the same tags.
