13 Cool, Beautiful and Inspirational Math Quotes - MathInsider | Web tools and Research | Scoop.it
Math needs better PR. When it comes to coolness math really should be up there with the new iPad, the latest X-Factor winner and whichever color is fashionable this season. Often people actually think that it’s cool to not be able to do math! As part of Maths Insider’s mission to make math cool I’ve pulled the best math quotes from the Twitter stream @Math_Quotes, and used my limited artistic skills to add them to some nice backgrounds (Powerpoint templates in fact!). Enjoy and do share them with your friends and family! Math needs all the PR it can get!

The Educator’s Guide to Pinterest | Edudemic | Web tools and Research | Scoop.it
Your classroom probably has a bulletin board. It’s the perfect spot to organize information and show off great work. Increasingly, learning is happening online, and so it’s no surprise that the bulletin board has moved online. Enter Pinterest. Teachers of young students are using the online application to find lesson ideas and stay organized, while middle and high school teachers are getting their students to use the app themselves for planning projects or collecting materials for class discussions. And librarians are running reading programs and creating book lists with that handy little Pinterest button. If you’re wondering whether you should join Pinterest, read on. We’ll show you how to get your account set up, how other educators are using Pinterest, and where to find inspiration on the app.

6 of 10 Millennials Have 'Low' Technology Skills

6 of 10 Millennials Have 'Low' Technology Skills | Web tools and Research | Scoop.it

Dian Shaffhause writes: "American millennials may be the first generation that grew up with computers and Internet access, but all that time spent glued to a small screen hasn't translated to technology competence, according to a research project that analyzed data from an assessment of adult competencies that tests cognitive and workplace skills."

So nice to see that I'm not the only one who's noticed this change, and that we have the data to prove it. How we change this is the Big Question of the day.

This statistic floored me: "91 percent of millennials consider a lack of computer skills irrelevant to their job prospects..." How are we sending students off to college, let alone into the workforce, with such a lack of understanding of the world?

Ever wonder why you can't figure out when and where to stick a comma? It's probably because commas, by far, have more rules and applications than any other punctuation mark. But why do so many people use the semicolon incorrectly? Comparatively, it should be one of the easiest punctuation marks to master. And why doesn't anybody seem to use the en dash?

Joyce Valenza's curator insight, May 12, 2014 9:15 PM

About Jennifer Jamison (NJ):

Today’s school librarians employ a variety of tools beyond books to educate kids. They use technology to engage students living in a tech-heavy world. They collaborate with teachers to support curriculum. They create “maker” spaces where students can work on arts and crafts projects. They maintain a flexible schedule, so kids can drop in when they wish. And they create a welcoming atmosphere that kids crave.

“This is the third place, the safe space to expand their knowledge,” Jamison says. “It’s free, it’s accessible, it’s comfortable. You can find friends here, kind of like Cheers – everybody knows your name.”
