A Curated Library of Resources for Startups: The Startup Library

A Curated Library of Resources for Startups: The Startup Library | 2.0 library | Scoop.it

Robin Good: The Startup Library is a web-based information resource for startups of all kinds offering content covering many different topics ranging from consumer digital health, to e-commerce and education technology.

The Startup Library organizes information and resources on sector-specific accelerators, incubators and funding sources, trend reports and statistics on various geographic regions and markets and information on relevant associations and conferences.

From the official site: "...the Startup Library is a collection of highly vetted resources that will enable entrepreneurs to answer common market research questions. The Startup Library is a startup too"

"The most valuable quality of the Startup Library is that it is a highly curatorial endeavour. In a given week, the MaRS Market Intelligence team sifts through thousands of sources of market-related information in an attempt to give MaRS clients the most up to date, relevant and usable market research to inform their decisions."

The Startup Library is part of the the MaRS COMMONS, a Toronto hub or the hottest technology based companies.

The What and Why of Semantic Web Technologies

The What and Why of Semantic Web Technologies | 2.0 library | Scoop.it

"In his first article on The Semantic Web and the Modern Enterprise,  Lee Feigenbaum introduced the vision of the Semantic Web. He also discussed how the progress made while working towards that vision provides a strong foundation to help enterprises better deal with their information management challenges.

In this article, we’ll take a high-level look at what the core Semantic Web technologies are, why they’re different from conventional technology approaches and how they deliver tangible benefits for enterprise information management".

Sehrch: A New Semantic Search Engine

Sehrch: A New Semantic Search Engine | 2.0 library | Scoop.it

Traditional search engines index documents like pages, images or videos.

You can search their index by entering a regular query, like on Bing or Google, or you can benefit from their structured data by formulating advanced searches and get precise results.

But documents do not offer much information that is understandable by machines.

Sehrch, still in Alpha, gathers semantic web objects instead of documents.

A search like “name:Tony Iommi (type:Person)” will present biographical data about Mr Iommi instead of a list of links to pages that might hold relevant information. Even though there is a short intro to formulating queries, I found that it takes practice to get the results you are looking for.

With the right query, it’s beautiful, though.

What Comes After Web 2.0? Web 3.0. Web 4.0 And The Future

What Comes After Web 2.0? Web 3.0. Web 4.0 And The Future | 2.0 library | Scoop.it

What comes after Web 2.0?

Are we nearing a new age for the Internet?

Will Web 3.0 be a revolutionary shift and what exactly will its central features be?

While a lot of what is being said about Web 3.0 and Web 4.0 is informed speculation, it’s undoubtedly an exciting time for the Internet. Is a veritable revolution in the way we interact with information upon us?

Myriad questions require answers, but for the moment web users can only rely on extremely educated guesses as to what Web 3.0 will ultimately be like.

Before considering ideas about what advances will be made by Web 3.0, it’s useful to first remind ourselves of some of the core characteristics of Web 2.0.

Web 3.0: The Mobile Era

From The Original Article: "One era of the Web bleeds into another. Web 1.0 was defined by the rise of static websites and the ubiquity of browsers. Web 2.0 incorporated the infrastructure of 1.0 and added a social layer to it, giving the Web a new backbone.

One of the icons of Web 2.0, Digg, was sold to Betaworks yesterday and will be integrated into its News.me platform. This is the inflection point at which we see the definite transition of the Web 2.0 world to Web 3.0: The Mobile Era.

The Mobile Era has been built on the infrastructure of websites created in Web 1.0, and on the social layer of Web 2.0. If we are to describe The Age of Mobile with the Web 3.0 moniker, it's natural that all that has come before will be incorporated into it.

The Mobile Era incorporates its own bits into the aggregate, offering up dynamic new ways of computing (smartphones and tablets) where users interface not just through the Web and a browser, but also through applications available on these platforms that were built upon the principles of earlier eras of the Web.

Each era of the Web does not exist within its own bubble but builds upon the era that came before".

And by the way, the Web is not the Internet! It is a layer on top of the Internet.

The Semantic Web: Coming To A Google Search Near You

The Semantic Web: Coming To A Google Search Near You | 2.0 library | Scoop.it

Most SEOs have heard of the semantic web but a lot aren’t too sure what it is or how it affects searches, search results and the bottom line. Well read on because according to The Wall Street Journal over the next few months Google will be displaying answers to searches that are questions like “height of great pyramid”.

Dave Lauretti in this post, will try to explain what the semantic web is and how Google has been trying to master the domain of semantic information – that is, information that is related to each other.

The emergence of Web 3.0

The emergence of Web 3.0 | 2.0 library | Scoop.it

Thinking a lot about Web 3.0 today and how social bookmarking is so close to being a truly intelligent aggregator.

The big difference to me between 2.0 and 3.0 is that there will be a resurgence of experts….but that the experts will be decided by basic market values of supply and demand.

We will need experts to show us how to collate all of the information over the internet and then make it visually accessible to our audience.

We will need experts to advise programmers on how to do this.

We will need to become better at analyzing data that isn’t necessarily numeric. Thankfully and naturally, I think teacher-librarians are in a prime position to do this work.

Welcome to Web 3.0, The Contextual Web | Social Media Today | 2.0 library | Scoop.it

The Attention Internet we’ve lived in for the past decade has been all about the business of amassing eyeballs at content sites, either through massive scale—Yahoo, AOL/Huffington Post, You Tube —or by providing search for content - Google, Bing, Ask.

Now in 2012 it feels like we’re on the middle of a massive transition on the Internet. We see the order of power changing, but it’s not quite clear why.

Things are happening—smartphones, apps, the Internet of Things, and of course social networks.

So are we transitioning to “the Social Internet?”
