Digital PM Summit

Digital PM Summit | Web Project Management | Scoop.it
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

The Digital PM Summit was a great event last November. $999 plus airfare, meals and lodging is a bit steep for my bottom line, but if your business is booming or someone else is paying, you'll enjoy this event.

Last time there was a lot of info for those wanting to get into Digital Project Management. Since this is the second time around, the topics might be more advanced. If so, even the professional PM might find this worthwhile. And there is always the networking with the speakers, which is definitely fun since the attendance is kept deliberately small.

I'm in a situation right now where using Google Docs for PM has been suggested. My hesitation is the security, but what the organization really needs is a PM software solution. Ideas for Managing Time Clutter | Web Project Management | Scoop.it
Project Managers who know that their team members have 5 styles of working to deadlines, can manage each of them differently while working to improve their skills at the same time.
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:
I've encountered all of these personalities and tendencies. This article is right - the smart manager will adapt, but make sure the performance of the rest of the team is not negatively impacted by a team member's style. All things in moderation, even differences in approach and work habits.

TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

I've seen first hand the impact of team members who engage in project politics. As a Web PM don't tolerate this. You owe it to your team to protect them from passive-aggressive team members.

This is a good article for PMs and organizational leaders as it points out contributors to project politics. The worst situation you can face is a PM that is engaging in project politics. If you manage PMs, stay on the lookout for this situation and deal with it promptly for the sake of your team and organization's success.

The “Top Down” vs. “Bottom Up” Approach to the Program/Project Management Office - Business 2 Community

The “Top Down” vs. “Bottom Up” Approach to the Program/Project Management Office - Business 2 Community | Web Project Management | Scoop.it

Click here to edit the content

TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

Okay., this article is basically an add for a piece of PM software, still, the idea of Top Down vs Bottom Up approach to the PMO is one I've been analyzing recently as I am consulting with a major Boston university that is just setting up a PMO. Especially in the early days  of instituting a PMO, and even I would argue for established PMOs, keeping the process simple, pays big benefits for stakeholders, Governance Committees and development teams.

Yes, In Fact, You Should Be Taking Your Hour Lunch Break. This Is Why. - There Are No Roads | Web Project Management | Scoop.it
You're not too busy. No, no you're not.
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

Your brain needs time to assimilate information. That is one reason lunch breaks are so valuable. You can't be creative for any length of time if you are trying to do your work at your desk during lunch. Do your team a favor if you are a Director of Web Services - make sure they get the message you expect them to take a break during their lunch break. Don't be impressed by those who are slugging through work sitting at their desk and don't encourage meetings that encrouch on your team's lunch time. It is one of the simplest ways to get an edge over the competition.

Still, the information does offer a plausible explanation for some of the issues involved the site functionality problems.

What is the best approach to project prioritization?

What is the best approach to project prioritization? | Web Project Management | Scoop.it
Project prioritization is a critical success factor to meeting organizational goals and strategy with projects, and the right approach is vital.
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

Scoring on a variety of key strategic factors is crucial in prioritizing which projects an organization should tackle. Key points from this article include the need to avoid subjective criteria and focus on business criteria and utilize enough criteria to really allow for a ranking.

To take this approach a step further, investigate weighted rankings. Make sure cost/benefit analysis is one of the ranking areas! Every project either produces revenue or cuts costs. Reflect that in your priority scale.

9 Effective Ways To Organize Time And Deliver Project In Tight Deadlines

9 Effective Ways To Organize Time And Deliver Project In Tight Deadlines | Web Project Management | Scoop.it

When a project is assigned to your department, you get eager to successfully accomplish it. In this article, we will see 9 effective ways to organize time and deliver project In tight deadlines.

TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

I see a lot of articles like this that are written for people who are managing projects but not project managers.

What is missing in this article? Here are 5 I found and a bonus to boot!

  1. You need to make a list of all the tasks involved in the project.
  2. You need to ask those who will be responsible for completing those tasks to assign a time estimate for each task.
  3. You need to estimate when the project will be done.
  4. You need to record when tasks are complete.
  5. You need to track how long those tasks are taking and if they are not progressing fast enough you have to find a way to help the person responsible finish the task on time with help.

Did you find more things that should be included? This is a great exercise in preparing for the PMP exam?

Here is your bonus #6: You need to sit down before the project starts and make a list of everything that could go wrong and then come up with a back up plan for each thing. Also, make sure you go over this list with the stakeholder or project sponsor!

You can read more about how to educate your stakeholders for a successful project at: http://www.tonyaprice.com/blog/

5 Ways to Be a Better Leader

5 Ways to Be a Better Leader | Web Project Management | Scoop.it
While not everyone can be the boss, more and more employees are asked to take on leadership roles.
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

One of the toughest challenges of setting up PMO for an organization that has no history of project management is to get PMs who have survived in an organization where initiative was not rewarded to understand they need to develop and utilize their leadership skills. We talk about communication skills and organizational skills for PMs but initiative, creativity and a willingness to look for and be an advocate for improvements in the process is a critical skill all PMs need. When PMs develop their leadership skills the organization, stakeholders and team gain tremendous benefit.

Why you Need a Chief Digital Officer

Why you Need a Chief Digital Officer | Web Project Management | Scoop.it
Simply finding the right person to perform this essentialthough perhaps temporaryduty is an undertaking that itself could have entrenched enterprises lagging the innovators.
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

It is still amazing to me that organizations which insist that their Web strategy is crucial to their success still have their Web Operations sit under IT or Marketing. It is time that the Chief Digital Officer, who brings an understanding of Web, IT and Marketing, has a seat at the table when business strategies are discussed. They need to be there when IT and Marketing strategies are discussed to comment on how the Web can contribute and support those strategies. IT and Marketing are but contributors to reaching customers/clients through Web strategies, not the other way around. Smart organizations are starting to recognize this.
