A brief description of why Google Docs is a great help with project management.
I'm in a situation right now where using Google Docs for PM has been suggested. My hesitation is the security, but what the organization really needs is a PM software solution. If you are a small business, especially a startup, definitely read this article and consider using Google docs for your PM documentation. If you aren't already.!
Project Managers who know that their team members have 5 styles of working to deadlines, can manage each of them differently while working to improve their skills at the same time.
I've encountered all of these personalities and tendencies. This article is right - the smart manager will adapt, but make sure the performance of the rest of the team is not negatively impacted by a team member's style. All things in moderation, even differences in approach and work habits.
Project Smart is the project management resource that helps managers at all levels to improve their performance. We provide an important knowledge base for those involved in managing projects of all kinds.
I just found this great resource for Project Managers. Have a question? The advice offered in these forums seems to me to be very good overall.
Whether it's the project gossip or the passive-aggressive team mate who makes everyone miserable, project politics can be a drain on productivity and a death knell for project morale. Project polit...
I've seen first hand the impact of team members who engage in project politics. As a Web PM don't tolerate this. You owe it to your team to protect them from passive-aggressive team members.
This is a good article for PMs and organizational leaders as it points out contributors to project politics. The worst situation you can face is a PM that is engaging in project politics. If you manage PMs, stay on the lookout for this situation and deal with it promptly for the sake of your team and organization's success.
Okay., this article is basically an add for a piece of PM software, still, the idea of Top Down vs Bottom Up approach to the PMO is one I've been analyzing recently as I am consulting with a major Boston university that is just setting up a PMO. Especially in the early days of instituting a PMO, and even I would argue for established PMOs, keeping the process simple, pays big benefits for stakeholders, Governance Committees and development teams.
Your brain needs time to assimilate information. That is one reason lunch breaks are so valuable. You can't be creative for any length of time if you are trying to do your work at your desk during lunch. Do your team a favor if you are a Director of Web Services - make sure they get the message you expect them to take a break during their lunch break. Don't be impressed by those who are slugging through work sitting at their desk and don't encourage meetings that encrouch on your team's lunch time. It is one of the simplest ways to get an edge over the competition.
A growing consensus of IT experts, outside and inside the government, have figured out a principal reason why the website for Obamacare’s federally-sponsored insurance exchange is crashing.
You always know you are in troulbe when your boss tells you that missing an aribitrary deadline not based on task estimates but on politics is - "not an option."
I'm not against the Natonal Health Care System and I am against the Tea Party holding our country hostage because of it, but I am interested in the issues related to the Website and its launch. This article presents an interesting take on why the site is having such problems. I susepct the author is not in favor of the law, so I am viewing this with a bit of skeptism. Still, the information does offer a plausible explanation for some of the issues involved the site functionality problems.
PageRank and keyword obsession is fading away. Google is now pushing you to focus on understanding your target users, producing great content, establishing your authority and visibility, and providing a great experience for the users of your site.
Nice article examining changes Google has made recently and the impact on SEO results and strategy.
While not everyone can be the boss, more and more employees are asked to take on leadership roles.
One of the toughest challenges of setting up PMO for an organization that has no history of project management is to get PMs who have survived in an organization where initiative was not rewarded to understand they need to develop and utilize their leadership skills. We talk about communication skills and organizational skills for PMs but initiative, creativity and a willingness to look for and be an advocate for improvements in the process is a critical skill all PMs need. When PMs develop their leadership skills the organization, stakeholders and team gain tremendous benefit.

I try to stay away from ads, but I realize PMs are often searching for better tools. This one looks interesting but I haven't used it myself. I include just as a FYI for those looking for alternatives.
This is the time of year for trend articles and this one is spot on in my opinion. Already I'm seeing tthe value of these approaches in the IT organization as it deals with stakeholders. Playing off the previous Scooped article on top down management for PMOs, notice number 4 which mentions that as data and costs become more centralized a top-down view is more possible.
Upcoming demographic shifts mean that the majority of people in the workforce will soon be those who grew up using social tools to communicate and engage with each other.
Knowledge of Project Management is a great background for anyone to have. Attention liberal arts grads: your education provides you with the skills necessary to be a great PM: ability to communicate well both orally and in writing; ability to work well with stakeholders and teams; ability to motivate people; curiosity about a wide range of topics. Not sure what to do with you Sociology or Political Science or History degree? Look into Project Management. It could be the dream career you didn't know existed.
Simply finding the right person to perform this essentialthough perhaps temporaryduty is an undertaking that itself could have entrenched enterprises lagging the innovators.
It is still amazing to me that organizations which insist that their Web strategy is crucial to their success still have their Web Operations sit under IT or Marketing. It is time that the Chief Digital Officer, who brings an understanding of Web, IT and Marketing, has a seat at the table when business strategies are discussed. They need to be there when IT and Marketing strategies are discussed to comment on how the Web can contribute and support those strategies. IT and Marketing are but contributors to reaching customers/clients through Web strategies, not the other way around. Smart organizations are starting to recognize this.
