We often consider the products we use and their packaging to be two separate things – the product is the thing we want, and its packaging is a piece of trash to be thrown away.

Web Design: The Battle for the Body Field

Web Design: The Battle for the Body Field | web news | Scoop.it
As we attempt to combine multi-device design requirements with complex, media-rich narratives, we’ve hit the wall. The chunky, fields-and-templates approach we’ve developed can’t save us from the mismatch between our content and HTML’s descriptive tools. The good news is we don’t have to convert all our projects to XML to learn from the XML community’s wisdom. By using custom elements and properties to represent content’s meaning, transforming it into HTML on output, and ensuring that editing tools share the same vocabulary, we can publish structured content that supports the needs of today’s editors and art directors while also making our content safe for future generations.

Google's Next Goal: To Stop Deforestation with Global Forest Watch

Google's Next Goal: To Stop Deforestation with Global Forest Watch | web news | Scoop.it

Deforestation has long been cited as a problem, but a lack of accessible data meant that the general public had to take someone's word for the figures. As a result, its threat always seemed more abstract and nebulous than, say, climate change or rising sea levels.

Until now: Google has unveiled its Global Forest Watch, an online tool that monitors deforestation around the world in near-real time.

One role of media should be to act like those speed monitors we see that tell us how fast we are going. Hopefully a program like Google's Global Forest Watch can help us monitor deforestation in real time.

After the mobile revolution took palce internet has become a much more dynamic medium, like it was intended to be, where a fixed 980 pixel layout is just not enough in order to reach all users. Today web design is about making content accessible through multiple digital channels, in suitable formats for various devices. But designing for multiple screens can be problematic since the user needs are constant but the technological conditions are diverse, so how can we rise to the challange and adopt to the new deigital landscape? Here are a set of patterns that might be a step in the right direction in order to cover the most essential aspects of multiscreen design.

How to Schedule Google+ Posts, The Complete Guide

Scheduling posts and activity to Google+ is one of the most common questions, probably because everyone wants to be able to do it at one time or another, and of course Google+ offers no such option built-in.

But to complicate matters more, the array of third-party tools that are available aren't all the same. Essentially, some support personal profiles, while others only support brand pages.

While there isn't yet a single tool to rule them all, I can offer you a complete comparison of the free tools and techniques, some additional paid social media management tools that make for great options, and even debunk a few myths and legends that really don't work at all.

Learn more: http://owl.li/tpYkW

Of all the tools available, is there one that you rely on the most? Are there any that I've completely missed and need to review pronto?

Thanks! And if this is a hot topic for you, please share and bookmark as I will be keeping this post updated as options develop.

The Science behind viral stories on the Web

The Science behind viral stories on the Web | web news | Scoop.it

"When Jonah Berger was a graduate student at Stanford, in the early aughts, he would make a habit of reading page A2 of the Wall Street Journal, which included a list of the five most-read and the five most-shared articles of the day. “I’d go down to the library and surreptitiously cut out that page,” he recalls. “I noticed that what was read and what was shared was often different, and I wondered why that would be.” What was it about a piece of content—an article, a picture, a video—that took it from simply interesting to interesting and shareable? What pushes someone not only to read a story but to pass it on?"

In recent years, marketers and company owners could approach SEO and its value to Google and other search engines by producing quality, relevant content that would interest their audience. Unfortunately, with the rise of dishonest PageRank practices, it seems that producing that same quality, relevant content is no longer the most effective way to rank in the search engine arena. Arctic Harvester Proposes Large-Scale Hydroponic-Farming Near Greenland

Arctic Harvester Proposes Large-Scale Hydroponic-Farming Near Greenland | web news | Scoop.it

Arctic Harvester was the first prize winning entry in the “Innovation and Architecture for the Sea” category of the Jacques Rougerie Foundation International Architecture Competition, 2013.  It proposes an itinerant soil-less agricultural infrastructure designed to drift the circulating ocean currents between Greenland and Canada, exploiting the nutrient-rich fresh water released by melting icebergs as the basis for a large-scale hydroponic-farming system. The floating facility is equipped to house a community of 800 people, inspired in its compact urban form by vertically oriented, bayside Greenlandic villages and their social, cultural and economic relationship to the sea.

Healthcare moving towards better patient experience: Is digital the answer?

Healthcare moving towards better patient experience: Is digital the answer? | web news | Scoop.it

Today in the highly digital world that we have come to live in, the experience has to be extended to the consumer’s devices: namely mobile phones, tablets and personal computers delivered on the backbone of the World Wide Web.

So in this era where consumers have come to expect more from their brands, are patients correct in demanding a better user experience from their care providers?

Healthcare organizations are aware of this expectation and they are also aware that physicians and their allied co-workers need a better medium to communicate and collaborate among them. This not only leads to a better experience for all but also is critical as hospitals continue to drive better clinical outcomes.

One of the aspects of digital engagement is providing an exceptional web experience, whether it is providing physicians with real time data and reports on the cases they are following or engaging patients with education that can help them manage their health better.

The digital experience can help in achieving the following

1)      Provide a platform for better collaboration between physicians. Also this helps in increasing consultations between experts who are not necessarily collocated but still need a visual to make a better diagnosis.

2)      Accentuates the sharing of information between hospitals and even between various departments of the same  hospital.

3)      Leveraging the existing hospital information to give a visual picture to the patients on education and how they can leverage the hospital and its facilities to the best of its ability.

4)      Running extensive 360 degree programs involving various departments like surgery, nutrition and physiotherapy.

5)      Providing a mechanism for better healthcare management.
