Will Facebook survive Oculus Rift success?

Will Facebook survive Oculus Rift success? | web learning | Scoop.it
With Oculus Rift, Facebook could end up facing a Catch-22. If it wants Oculus to achieve its massive potential, it has to build out and open up its platform. But if Facebook opens up the platform, it faces the risk of someone building the ideal social VR experience faster or better than it could.

Sure, it could fend off rival social VR apps by locking them out. But then it would be stifling the platform, empowering the Oculus competitors that will inevitably arise.

If Facebook wants to seize the opportunities in social VR, it will eventually have to pivot its focus away from the Newsfeed and go all-in on this new, uncharted world.

Jason Deegan's curator insight, March 23, 2015 7:24 PM

With Facebook acquiring the taste of VR, the industry will now grow quickly as other companies will now see that if Facebook has trust in it, why can't we do he same?

Kerry Zhang's curator insight, March 27, 2015 12:15 AM

Oculus rift is a new virtual reality headset that allows players to fully dive into their game environment essentially separating them from the real world. Oculus rift will surely be the biggest breakthrough in virtual reality opening the door to unlimited possibilities and is sure to take the gaming world by storm especially in this day and age. There is no other reason that many entrepreneurs have invested billions into the project, because what they see is potential in what would become one of the biggest markets in the globe. If successfully marketed and released oculus rift is sure to be one of the most successful creations of our time and we should be sure to look out.

Would You Tell Me How to Get, How to Get to eLearning: Development and Complexity

Would You Tell Me How to Get, How to Get to eLearning: Development and Complexity | web learning | Scoop.it
Though e-learning is primarily aimed at much older students, essentially adults, the cognitive processes become exponentially more complex with age. For the sake of clarity, we will discuss learning as it occurs conspicuously in children. Once understood, we can reapply these principals to college level development. In the 1960's, television was deemed mutually exclusive to development, and for good reasons. But somehow Sesame Street managed to transcend this impasse, and accomplish an admirable job within an uncooperative medium. It is important to appreciate that the preceding 'educational programming,' despite insufficiencies, should not be seen as a failure in general, but initial attempts necessary to reach the unusually high standards Sesame Street achieved. An appreciation of core educational theories is crucial for creating classrooms in a software medium. One need not subscribe to these theories per se, in order to benefit from their implicit strategies. What one discovers is that digital calculation, the fundamental function of absolutely all computers do, is incapable of non-empirical processes (ie. open-ended problem solving important to education). Nonetheless, Sesame Street's methodical testing paradigm, where media are merely means not ends, by investigating how minds might be addressed in the act of perception/interpretation of that mean, allows disappointing idiosyncrasies inherent to the medium to become useful features available to producers.

Using non-Personal Computers for eLearning: Sri Lankan Experience | Liyanagunawardena | Journal of Education and Training Studies

Using non-Personal Computers for eLearning: Sri Lankan Experience | Liyanagunawardena | Journal of Education and Training Studies | web learning | Scoop.it
Communal Internet access facilities or telecentres are considered a good way to provide connectivity to people who do not possess home connectivity. Attempts are underway to utilize telecentres as eLearning centres providing access to learning materials to students who would otherwise not be able to take up eLearning. This paper reports on the findings of qualitative interviews conducted with 18 undergraduate students from two Sri Lankan universities on their eLearning experiences using communal Internet access centres. The findings suggest that despite the efforts by telecentres to provide a good service to eLearners, there are various problems faced by students including: costs, logistics, scarcity of resources, connectivity speeds, excessive procedures, and lack of support. The experiences of these Sri Lankan students suggest that there is much that needs to be understood about user perspectives in using telecentres, which could help formulate better policies and strategies to support eLearners who depend on communal access facilities.

Mediated Quality: An Approach for the eLearning Quality in Higher Education: Library and Information Science Journal Article | IGI Global

Mediated Quality: An Approach for the eLearning Quality in Higher Education: Library and Information Science Journal Article | IGI Global | web learning | Scoop.it
Abstract
Even if the question of eLearning quality has been intensely discussed in the recent years, with several approaches and models arising, consistent transferring of concepts into practices is still difficult (Elhers & Hilera, 2012). In fact, eLearning is given different importance by the several stakeholders; consequently, the educational institutions’ culture of quality –meanings, discourses, representations and practices- is highly variable (Ehlers & Schneckenberg, 2010) and adapting to external frameworks and models of quality could be difficult. As a result, the implementation of quality eLearning in HEI is slowed down or blocked (Conole, Smith, & White, 2007). This article analyzes three quality models taking into account the different underlying values and quality cultures underpinning practices, in an attempt to show how the embedded epistemological values generate technical practices that may or may not respect the complexities of quality as a contextualized, multiperspective, multidimentional process. Drawing on this analysis, the authors introduce the concept of “mediated quality” as approach that takes into account the participants engagement as insiders of a (quality) learning culture. An example of this approach is given through the case of quality of teaching/learning, and the mediation introduced through Learning Design.

A Pedagogical Ontology as a Playground in Adaptive Elearning Environments

A Pedagogical Ontology as a Playground in Adaptive Elearning Environments | web learning | Scoop.it
ABSTRACT The support for teaching and learning with semantic technologies and intelligent knowledge processing has been approached by four concepts: programmed instruction, adaptive learning environments, intelligent tutoring systems, and educational recommender systems. While the demand for automated support in teaching and learning is estimated as high, the use of developed systems is observably low. With reference to educational theories, this paper argues that one reason for this is an overestimation of the possibilities of such systems. Considering the limitations of automated systems in human communication as a constraint, a pedagogical ontology as a description language is proposed that opens up an educational playground for teachers and learners.
