28 Good Examples of Portrait Usage in Web Design

Web designing is usually a tricky process, where every tiny detail matters and contributes to creating the main general aspect and image of the site. Everything is important to consider when designing that web page you hope will attract countless visitors and potential clients. It’s never a waste of time to improve the usability of the site and its structure, adding value to the way the content is displayed. Also, the appearance does say a lot, because it is the first that our eyes perceive and creates that first impression that demands hard efforts to beat later. Of course, tastes differ and, for some people, a minimalistic, simple layout will be just perfect, while for others the abundance of colours and shapes are mandatory. So, it’s important to make some research and see what theme is the best for your site.

Facebook, the behemoth - I Make Things Work

I came across this page on Pingdom regarding the latest stats for Facebook and YouTube.

"Facebook now has 600 million users worldwide, generating an estimated 770 billion page views each month."

Apart from the jaw gaping obvious (and slightly) scary numbers of users, it had me wondering “How on earth (or…?) do you run a web site for 600 million users?”, so I started looking around for that.

I shall point out that this is a highly non-scientific research, and I have not verified any of the sources, nor have I asked anyone at Facebook, and thus is entirely relying on dated articles that may or may not be correct. You can judge for yourself.

A List Apart: Articles: Sketching: the Visual Thinking Power Tool

As a kid, I spent hours drawing and sketching ideas that popped into my head.

I used drawing as a primary language for capturing thoughts, exploring ideas, and then sharing those ideas. Teachers and mentors encouraged me, helping to sustain sketching as a key skill throughout school and into my professional career. Good fortune has ignited my passion to become a sketch advocate, helping others rediscover sketching as a powerful problem-solving and communication tool.

Reasons Why White Spaces are Good in Web Designing

In the context of web designing, white space is referred to the space between different design elements. The area between text, paragraphs, images, links and footers etc. are referred as white space. White space is not necessarily “white”it is essentially a blank space.

Use of white space helps in scanning different sections of websites and web pages. While designing web site template designers are often found to underrate the importance of white space. It reduces the amount of text that a visitor is required to scan at one go. Visual separation of different designing elements can be effectively done by using white space. A web site template using white space effectively appears clean, uncluttered and fresh. Let us explore several aspects of white space (also referred as negative space) that are relevant to web designing.

Share your love - Flattr someone - I Make Things Work

In my signing-up frenzy a couple of weeks ago (I have one of those once every quarter just about) I signed up for Flattr, who are running a rather interesting concept. It is a service I had completely missed in all other noise, so you might all know about it already. I didn’t, so this article is for those of you who, like me, didn’t know about it previously.

Flattr – Social micropayments – Mozilla Firefox_022 by mathiashellquist
Basically, the theory goes, there is good content online. There are also consumers of that good content. Quite a few of those consumers of the content wouldn’t mind at all to contribute to the creator of said content, but the ways of doing the contributions so far have all been cumbersome and/or expensive (for everyone involved). Enter Flattr.

The Design Matrix: A Powerful Tool For Guiding Client Input - Smashing Magazine

I used to think the beginning of a website design project was the best part. Hopes are high. People are full of great ideas. Nobody is disappointed yet. But as I gained experience, I found that learning about a client’s brand, competitors and customers doesn’t always give clear direction about design goals.

Brand discussions can generate goals like “be modern,” but they don’t necessarily determine how to accomplish those goals. Competitor reviews can devolve into cherry-picking sessions that spawn “frankencomps” rather than provide helpful feedback. And mood boards, which communicate a general feeling, don’t help to articulate or prioritize design goals. With a design matrix, you can guide discussions and establish clear direction.
