Perspective using Illustrator

How to Draw in Perspective using Illustrator When creating an illustration or design using a perspective view, it is much easier to draw in perspective using Illustrator rather than Photoshop. You seem to have a lot more control, and the tools are quicker to use and help you to get the job done easier. Also, you can go outside of the document restraints if your vanishing point is of the edge of the page. You can make all sorts of guide lines to help you properly alight your elements. Here, I created a mock theatre design based off of dozens of photos that I compiled from the internet. With these, I took elements from different theaters that I likes and created my own. This doesn t exist in real life. Using the Perspective Tools in Illustrator Illustrator has a couple of built-in tools for creating artwork in the proper perspective. The perspective grid tool helps you to place objects in the proper perspective. When you select the Perspective Grid Tool, the default grid comes up, and e

Why Hierarchy is Important to Design

Hierarchy Is Control When you look at any form of art, whether it is a traditional artist s work, or it s a professional design, it has a path that you naturally follow as you look over it. How does your eye know where to go next? It really doesn t. It s manipulated into looking at certain elements in a certain order, due to it s appearance. This whole process is called visual hierarchy. There are several factors that go into hierarchy. These factors can be combined with one another to add a lot of variety to your visual hierarchy. Lets take a look at ways to break things down visually in your designs. Bold Text Headings are a great way to break down text. If your design is text heavy, break it into sections and add headings and sub headings. These headings give readers an idea of what each paragraph is about. This is important because most people scan text. They don t read every word. Size Want to make sure something gets seen first? Make it big. The bigger it is, the harder it is to

How to Add Google Web Fonts to Your Website

Add Google Web Fonts to Your Website As we all know, there is often more than one way to accomplish the same thing. This is especially true when it comes to web design. There are right ways and wrong ways to do things, but there are also viable alternatives as well. I showed you how to add custom fonts to your website using @font-face. As easy as that is, I am going to show you how to use an alternative, which is adding Google web fonts to your website. It is just as easy (some might say even easier) to add Google web fonts to your website. You won t believe how easy it is to add custom fonts to your next web project. The interface itself isn t that hard. I actually like how the interface is set up for you to choose which fonts you would like to use. You can preview each font at the size that you would like. 8 Reasons Why Working From Home Might Not Be For You

Working From Home: Everyone s Biggest Dream or Worst Nightmare Everyone dreams of having a job where they can be their own boss and do what they want to do when they want to do it. The problem is that working from home is not as easy as everyone thinks it is. There are a lot of factors that go into a successful work environment. We ll talk about why you might want to think twice about working from home. Space I started out working from home in a corner of the bedroom I share with my wife. While this may not sound like much of a problem, you have to remember that another person lives there. She has every right to get dressed after a shower, do her make up, etc. Our bedroom isn t very big, so I had a very small corner where I built my own L shaped desk, anchored to the wall. It was a nice space, organized and everything, but it was still cramped. Every time I got up or sat down, I smashed my knee into the corner of the desk. I had barely enough room to slide into place. Why Design Isn’t Free

Good Design Isn t Free If you saw my post yesterday, I was upset about someone posting in a Facebook group who was promising a job to a designer who would create a logo for them if they liked it . I have a problem with businesses preying on naive or novice designers, only to shatter their hopes and dreams. Not only do they do this, but they also take away from their passion and love of the field of design. This has all sparked today s post, centered around the idea that design isn t free. Our Time is Worth Something When we would be focused on a paying client or promoting our business, we are designing your logo, business cards, stationary, and other branding materials. Everyone s time is worth something, because we can t get it back. I can t go back and collect time from you for the time I spent working on your project. The least you can do is compensate me for my time. Promising Something and Not Following Through Is Stealing You promised a job, exposure, office space, or something

The Work of Von Glitschka

Von Glitschka I do a lot of illustrative work here on Design Crawl, such as graphics and icons, but if you want to see a real master at work, you should take a look at Von Glitschka. If you’ve never heard of him, his “small boutique design firm” as he calls it, does illustrative design work for some of the biggest names in business. Let’s take a look at Von Glitschka and the tremendous amount of great work he’s done. Quick Bio Glitschka went to the Burnley school of Art in Seattle and graduated in 1986. This was the pre-digital era, but in 1991 he started in digital at a new job. He’s been working with sporting goods for the NBA, NHL and MLB when he worked with Upper Deck. If you didn’t collect sports cards when you were young, Upper Deck is the company who made sports memorabilia. Von Glitschka Got Fired Well, someone’s probably kicking themselves now. I would be. Some idiot, anticipating that Glitschka was leaving for another job, decided to fire him before he quit.

My Response to Someone Looking For Free Design Work

Free Design Work? It Doesn t Exist It happens every day. Some jerk places a post somewhere looking for a free ride. They re looking to take advantage of people s hopes and dreams to meet their own selfish objectives. I ve had enough of a lot of things lately, but on this particular day, I just couldn t let it go. I was browsing a Graphic Design Facebook group, looking to see what s new, to give advice when needed, etc. I can across a post asking designers to post a logo idea for their business and if they liked their ideas, they would hire them. Here is a screenshot of my response: To my surprise, the one who posted the original message actually replied. To even more of my surprise, they tried to justify theirs actions, causing me to shut them down even further. Here is a continuation of the conversation: In other words, they have designers in their business but they take too long, so they thought they might post a request here to get ideas they could rip off of some poor sap looking
