Challenging the Model of 1:1 with BYOD

Challenging the Model of 1:1 with BYOD | Web 2.0 Tools in the EFL Classroom | Scoop.it

Our aim for using mixed devices was to challenge teachers and students to really integrate technology into their instruction and learning. By having multiple devices available, users are challenged to determine which device best suits their learning purpose, and teachers are also challenged to rethink how they are using technology.

Susan's insight:

Real-time assessment! Have just watched how this kindergarden teacher uses plickers and it's much clearer now. What a great way to assess your students' knowledge or comprehension of a topic using one single device.  Am sure students find it fun too but at the same time the teacher can round up answers to questions in a very short time.  Instead of mobile devices, students need a plicker card each which can be kept during the entire school year. I could see using this in EFL classes too.  Students can vote on correct answer anonymously and the teacher can see how many students are still having difficulties....

Susan's insight:

Just came across this and thought how great and simple the idea is.  We don't do enough of this with our students.  Look at how relaxed they all are, distributed in any which way around the classroom.  Some even on the floor!  Of course they are also learning through technology... Giving students the autonomy to discover what they want is key to motivating them in my opinion. Some great ideas!

A great add-on to put on your edmodo site.  It's an app or online game which helps kids explore their decisions in the digital world.  I played a round and think that it's quite catchy and motivating.  Depending on the choices you make, the characters make different decisions and outcomes turn out for the better or for the worse...

A great site to cannibalise, customize and remix existing webpages as well as learning how to write HTML. Super also for student to create "fake" pages and announcements with incredible realism. Lots of potential for project based work, advertising (eg App design), PSHE issues etc Nice example here: http://dhcooper.makes.org/goggles/dhcoopers-remix-of-bbc-news-us-police-arrest-silk-road-20-suspect-in-seattle

5 Creative Ways To Use Skype In The Classroom

5 Creative Ways To Use Skype In The Classroom | Web 2.0 Tools in the EFL Classroom | Scoop.it
Creative Ways To Use Skype In The Classroom

The answer: in more ways than you could imagine. While Skype was not designed as an educational tool, it’s quickly becoming one as teachers discover the many ways it enriches their lessons and the lives of their students. Even something as simple as hosting a guest speaker through a video call can add excitement to a lesson.

As with any tech tool, it can seem daunting to introduce this into your classroom at first. If you don’t know where to start, try one of these five creative ideas.

Susan's insight:

At Christmas I set up a Skype call with a two classes, one from Barcelona and the other from Ontario, Canada.  They asked each other questions and then finished by singing Xmas carols from their countries.  It was snowing in Ontario at the time and they even showed us what was happening through the window.  Fantastic for the kids!

Skype is a great tool to use in learning as it provides real time engagement with experts. This a great article with ideas about thinking outside of the box when integrating Skype.

Phil Hobrla's curator insight, March 16, 8:04 PM

Microsoft recently showcased a new Skype feature that allows for real-time, two-way, voice translation! This feature will make the Skype Cultural Exchange even more extensible and will allow those who use Skype for non-native language acquisition to have in-depth conversations, in their own languages, about their progress and issues in their learning.

Henry Lee's curator insight, March 16, 9:25 PM

Rescooped from Sarah Kozlowski. This make distance learning possible for virtual classrooms. While this setup up isn't ideal for a lot of virtual classroom setups, it can work as a low-tech solution.
