This looks like a great tool for getting students to work collaboratively. Let's hope that Google can be trusted to continue to support it.

Greg Quinlivan's curator insight, January 5, 9:38 PM
It might also be a place for online teachers to create a space for each of their students or small groups to interact, get feedback, etc. Of course, the one issue is the blocking of Google by certain countries, including the PRC unfortunately.

5 apps to use with Google Cardboard

5 apps to use with Google Cardboard | Web 2.0 Production | Scoop.it

Have you tried Google Cardboard in your classroom? This super inexpensive (under $10!) tool lets students explore virtual reality straight from your classroom. I’m a huge fan of Google Cardboard virtual reality experiences. You can take your students on virtual field trips, help them understand life in different parts of the world, and push students to ask questions about the world around them.

When virtual reality first came on the stage a few years ago it seemed like the cost would make it impossible for teachers to use it as a learning tool. The combination of a Google Cardboard viewer and a mobile device make this the perfect choice for classroom teachers. The handful of quality apps mentioned below are great choices for teachers looking to combine the super inexpensive! Google Cardboard with apps developed for both iPhones and Android devices.

10 Free Education Apps for iPad - Getting Smart

10 Free Education Apps for iPad - Getting Smart | Web 2.0 Production | Scoop.it

"One of the most popular categories of apps on any touch enabled mobile devices is obviously educational apps thanks to the real time, ready-in-hand help students get from them in and outside of their classroom. While there are millions of free educational apps, all of them are not worthy enough for downloading. Secondly, most of the top tier feature rich apps are either not free or offer a much downgraded ‘free’ version that offer a user experience far removed from what they provide in ‘paid’ version. So, finding a handful of free and useful education apps on diverse contents requires some amount of research and that is exactly what we help you to do here. Here below we are introducing 10 free education apps for iPad."

Unbelievable, tremendous resource. I wish I had this one growing up. It is a US gov site (EPA), and is for US geography. I'm betting you can search around for similar sites for other locales around the world. Great demo. Demo runs on Adobe Captivate. The demo took a little bit of time to load on a wired connection through a high speed fiber optic connection. Or skip the demo and play around with the maps. Site not all that fast. Still, it's worth waiting for if you want the data.

Remember though that finding the right tool is important, but how you structure and design interaction with the content is way more important. Taking classroom activities and materials and placing them on a web-based platform and expecting them to work is sure way to disappoint students. You need to think carefully about how the student will engage with the materials and how the materials relate to each other to ensure that your materials don’t just test the students’ knowledge and abilities, but that they guide and enable the student to hypothesise and make and confirm deductions in order to encourage deeper levels of autonomous learning.
