Rethinking Goffman's Front Stage/Back Stage

Over the years, many posts on this site have referenced sociologist Erving Goffman’s concept of “front stage” and “back stage” behaviors. Stemming from his book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1959), the twin concepts suggest that we have two different modes of presenting our selves: one when we are “on” for others (front stage) and another when we let down our guard (back stage).

But does this dichotomy hold up in the internet age?

Clive on Learning: Why face-to-face should be for special occasions

Like most people, I listen to quite a bit of music, but only very occasionally do I go to a live gig or concert; I watch a considerable amount of drama (most of it mysteries and thrillers I’m afraid), but this is on TV, only very rarely at the theatre; and I watch my fair share of sport, mostly on TV but (here’s where I break the pattern), also quite regularly at the Amex stadium in Brighton. The live events I have attended in my life are, in many cases, peak moments of high emotional engagement that I will never forget. The rest is just passing the time enjoyably.

Learning with 'e's: What the flip?

Learning with 'e's: What the flip? | Web 2.0 och högre utbildning | Scoop.it

Everywhere I look I'm seeing 'Flip teaching' or 'Flipped classroom'. There's a lot of hype about this 'flipping' idea and it's getting me flipping irritated. What does flipping actually involve? Does anyone know, or is the term being misused or misrepresented?

The Net in Higher Education: Öppna bedömningar

The Net in Higher Education: Öppna bedömningar | Web 2.0 och högre utbildning | Scoop.it

The Net in Higher Education: När behöver vi ses? | Web 2.0 och högre utbildning | Scoop.it

Educational Technology Guy: Flipped Classroom - what it is and my reservations of it

I have some issues with the "Flipped Classroom" model. The first is that this model leads to a lot of homework for students if they have to watch videos of lectures. This is not only asking a lot of the students to be able to do, but not anything really new or inventive. Students have other obligations and time commitments and watching video lectures is time consuming.

What this talk is about - it's called "Education as Platform" - is the idea of exploring some of the experiences we've had with massive open online learning, and exploring some of the criticisms that we've experienced, some of the criticisms that we've seen, and trying to understand what elements of the design are working and what elements of the design are not working, and to use this understanding to try to advance our perspective on the way online learning is proceeding and should proceed.

The corridor of uncertainty: The next best thing

The corridor of uncertainty: The next best thing | Web 2.0 och högre utbildning | Scoop.it

The demand for higher education in the world far outweighs the availability of places in established universities. That is clear from studies and statistics from organisations like UNESCO, OECD and Commonwealth of learning. Low cost or even free online learning using freely available open educational resources and based largely on student-centered collaborative learning or self-study offers a feasible model for offering higher education to all.

The Struggle Between Copyright and the Internet | STIR

The Struggle Between Copyright and the Internet | STIR | Web 2.0 och högre utbildning | Scoop.it

January 18, 2012 may well go down as a pivotal date in the history of the Internet – and of copyright. For on that day, the English-language Wikipedia and thousands of other websites were blacked out or modified to protest against two bills passing through the US legislative system that were designed to fight copyright infringement. To understand why that unprecedented action took place, and what it means for the future of the Net, it’s necessary to review the history of copyright briefly.

Flipping out? What you need to know about the Flipped Classroom | Inside Higher Ed

Flipping out? What you need to know about the Flipped Classroom | Inside Higher Ed | Web 2.0 och högre utbildning | Scoop.it

The traditional model of the lecture and learning cycle has long been to deliver the lecture during class and to send students home to do homework and perhaps engage in a discussion or two afterwards. The flipped classroom flips this model on its head: through lecture capture software, lectures can be captured on video for students to watch home, freeing up class time for hands-on learning activities and discussion.

In the last few years, the introduction of Creative Commons licensing has ensured that a lot of web based content is now open for reuse, repurposing and even commercial use. The Stanford University law professor Lawrence Lessig is one of the prime movers behind this initiative. Essentially, Creative Commons has established a set of licences that enables content creators to waive their right to receive any royalties or other payment for their work.

The Net in Higher Education: Emergent learning | Web 2.0 och högre utbildning | Scoop.it
