Web 2.0 och högre utbildning

Som en person med en nästintill "oändligt lång" erfarenhet av undervisning och lärande brukar jag ofta resa ragg när jag ser något som associerar till lärande som en snabb process som fixas till med några metoder som någon försöker pådyvla oss. Här var det just ordet "rapid" som gjorde att jag tänkte gå till motattack.

När man undersöker vilka verktyg studenterna använder på sin fritid, ser man ett ganska begränsat urval och en intressant iakttagelse är att de i allmänhet inte förknippar denna användning med lärande. Lärande, som studenterna uppfattar det, handlar främst om att "ta in" och memorera.

Is lecture capture the single worst example of poor educational technology use in higher education?

Recently, several writers have bemoaned the fact that a) there is often a significant time delay between the submission of papers to academic journals, and the papers actually reaching the reader, and b) many of the top, elite journals we are expected to publish in are in fact read by a very small percentage of the community the research is intended to reach. Open access journals (and there are several alternative funding models that support these) are the best way to address these problems. They open content up to be read by a much larger audience, and in my personal experience, they turn around reviews and publish sugnifcantly quicker than the standard traditional closed journals.
