This year marked the third year of the $200,000 Follett Challenge, which encourages K-12 schools around the US to share their innovative programs that have been put in place to prepare our modern students for the demands of the 21st century.Recently, the 4 semifinalists plus the “People’s Choice” winners —were announced. Padlet (formerly known as Wallwisher) is one of my favorite tools to use to have students quickly share ideas, questions, and multimedia notes on one page. Until today all of the notes that were added to a Padlet page appeared wherever a visitor double clicked. You can still use that free form format, but now you can also use a chronological format that Padlet is calling "streams." Streams places all notes into a chronological order based on the timestamp of when each note is written.
This years’ BETT show (British Education and Training Technology - the UK equivalent of ISTE or TCEA) presented a dizzying range speakers and exhibitors, and it was set against some interesting changes in UK education… To name a few, the national curriculum now includes coding, schools should now be teaching character, or ‘grit’ alongside subjects, …
For the hardcore do-it-yourself-ers, here are a few resources. Keep in mind that this is a deep subject, and there are lots of ways to create video, but these are options I have found really effective over the years.
Some of these tools are free. Some of them cost money. Most of the options that do cost money have full free trials. I urge you to test for yourself what works best for you and your audience and go from there.
http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia ; Camtasias website. A bit pricy, but an awesome screen recording program. Not to mention you can get a full 30 day trial for free. I use this every time I need to do a screen recording. Especially because if I screw up I can go back and edit it within Camtasia.
http://camstudio.org/ This software is great because it’s free, but there is no editing software built into it, and it makes giant files. I am not a fan of this software, but it’s free so I wanted to mention it.
http://www.jing.com This is a free screen recording software provided by Tech Smith. The free version has a time limitation though.
http://www.audacity.sourceforge.net/ Free audio recording program. You can also edit your audio within this program too. I use this any time I am not doing a screen recording.
http://www.pamela.biz/en/ ; Pamela Basic and Pamela Call Recorder both allow you to record a Skype call up to 15 minutes. This can be any type of Skype audio call. In Pamela Call Recorder this limitation can be removed by purchasing a license key. Basic users can upgrade to Pro to benefit from unlimited recording. If you want to record Skype video download Pamela Professional which supports video. The cost for a license key is about $30.00. But you also get a free trial.
http://www.xtranormal.com Easy site to create videos. If you have ever seen the Gieco commercials, this is the tool they use. I have toyed around with this, but I haven’t used it in any of my own marketing because I’d rather do my own voice work. But it’s still pretty cool.
http://animoto.com A great site to create simple slideshow videos (Affiliate Link) There is a free version of Animoto too.
