Excellent guide about how comics can be used to create short stories or to storyboard a larger project. Links to free versions of related software too - StoryboardThat.com; WeVideo.com (for turning comic strips into movies) and WidBook.com (for creating multimedia ebooks - and it's also a collaborative writing platform).

Nik's QuickShout: Downloading Online video - iDesktop.tv

Nik's QuickShout: Downloading Online video - iDesktop.tv | WEB.02 tools for creative EFL ESL learning & teaching | Scoop.it

iDesktop.tv provides a really useful and user friendly service for anyone who wants to use video clips from sources like YouTube, but doesn't want their students looking around at anything unsuitable, or for anyone who has ever found a really useful clip, only to go back later and find it has moved or been removed.

You can use the site to search through a huge collection of videos from various video sharing sites and when you find something you like the site will download and convert it to a file type of your choosing.

Lisa Oliner's insight:

Speed is an Invaluable Commodity in Classrooms and Lecture Halls: Students' Need for Readiness and Efficiency

To convey knowledge to the students we currently teach, over preparation is still better than too little. iDesk.tv is one way to appear totally prepared and knowledgeable about the world outside of classrooms and lecture halls. Because most students engage social media at hyper-speed, and this disposition is ingrained and forecasts how they will 'work' in the future, facilitators need to prove that their desktops are organized to meet that relatively new inclination and perception.

iDesk allows facilitators to take advantage of teachable moments (Havighurst, 1952) or switch media quickly to prevent digression or loss of direction toward a thematic objective. Furthermore, allowing students to see their Symbaloo homepage (for instance) prepared for a lesson unit or entire course with tiles that are subject specific and linked to pertinent lesson materials, theories, and videos (as on iDesk) models how they too can harness the semiotic power of their multimodality (Hull & Nelson, 2005) worlds. Also, don't be too quick to judge this attitude unfriendly to speakers of other languages because visual online preparedness allows instructors to return to subject matter seamlessly if informal assessment proves the need.

Funtastic! From the maker of BUTTONBASS  (formerly Button Beats), RecordingStudio.bz is a free student friendly site where students can record, save, listen to online and download their own creations. Just choose an instrumental (many to choose from) and add your own vocals. Very easy to do. This site is a must have tool for classsroom creativity!

I think RecordingStudio would also be cool to use with poetry. What a great way for kids to share their own work with music in the background.

If you haven't seen/used Button Bass yet check it out too. It is the most amazing site for kids (and adults) to create music. Play guitars, keyboards, xylophones (new), cubes, drums and more. You can spend hours just discovering everything on the site. My students and I LOVE this site.

OCR to Text to Speech ~ Around the Corner-MGuhlin.org: | WEB.02 tools for creative EFL ESL learning & teaching | Scoop.it

by Miguel Guhlin

"I'd like to find a way to scan text, then have that text read to the student." Isn't it great to have these kinds of questions that just wander in?

"While there are a variety of computer programs available for optical character recognition (OCR), I had only encountered this on the PaperPort Notes app. That process, while fine for me, wouldn't work well for the intended use.

"Voxdox is a new free text-to-speech app, available now foriphone, android and tablet that will read out any form of text for you in your choice of human voice.

"With Voxdox you can convert files, papers, articles, contracts and even full-length books to quality speech in over 20 languages, and then share them with your friends, class-mates and colleagues using Voxbox, the app’s integrated social database.

"Voxbox has already become the first choice solution for thousands of people around the world for sharing information in the fields of business and academia. By using Voxbox, your networks can find you in seconds and download high quality audio files generated from your text as well as the text itself. After downloading the text they have chosen, all that is left to do is press "play" and it will be read to them in one of a range of human voices."

Using social media to think beyond ourselves, to foster compassion, kindness empathy.& sharing

Using social media to think beyond ourselves, to foster compassion, kindness empathy.& sharing | WEB.02 tools for creative EFL ESL learning & teaching | Scoop.it

Everyone is connected today. Everything is personalized. What does that mean for kids and preparing for their future? Barbara writes about how to go beyond ourselves.

I came out to my car with my groceries and the car next to me was so close that I couldn’t get in from the driver’s side. I looked at their car to see why they did this? It was obvious. They wanted more room for themselves on their driver’s side. It was all about them. They were oblivious to what another driver might need. So I climbed in on the other side and had to jump over the stick shift. Yes, I drive a manual. I got in and then thought about how people live now. It is all about them. “Me” not “you.”

This is one reason why social media works. Facebook is about “you” building and connecting to “your” friends. It’s about sharing what you like, liking what others do, and showing off what you do. Twitter is even more about “you.”

Yes, you can use these tools to think beyond yourself. You can use these tools to promote and share. ..............

Interpersonal relationships mean more to most kids than their own families. They check their phone often. This is why texting why driving is such a problem. Smartphones alert you when there’s a text, a tweet, or some other response or nudge about almost anything. You are “always” connected to your network unless you turn your phone off. If they turn off their phones, they lose their connections. They have to answer right away or their friends will keep texting and eventually call. They are thinking “there must be something wrong if you are not answering ME.”

Personalized is more than the phone though. ........

If we want to reach our kids and help them become global citizens, we need to use the tools they are used to. But we need to demonstrate how to use these tools effectively and guide them so they think beyond themselves.

If we ban smartphones, we lose our kids. It’s like the old saying “if we can’t beat them, join them.” But it’s really not about kids only. I have a smartphone and text. I’m connected to my children and my friends. But I would never park my car so close that someone could not get into their driver’s side of their car.

It is about our mindset. We can focus on learning that is personal, but we need to teach and model compassion, kindness and empathy. We need to demonstrate what it is to be part of a social  network and how to look beyond yourself. We also need to use these tools so kids can learn the way they learn best. Take advantage of them. But we also need to show them that they need to look up and out at the world.

Connect with others to not only build connections but to share what you learn and learn from others. Teach the skills to recognize bias, validity and authenticity. Help them to be able to articulate intelligently and thoughtfully. This is their future and right now I’m a little concerned if they are ready for it.
