We assume that enthusiastic words motivate children to try harder. But when you look at the evidence, it’s not that clear-cut. It all depends on the wording.

Good advice for parents: "So what is the best way of praising your child? Lead author of the latest paper, psychologist Eddie Brummelman, advises stepping back and thinking about the message you’re giving, so that you’re not setting standards so high that your child might fear failing to meet them in the future."

As adults, we have a responsibility to teach by example, and that includes how to deal with bad behavior in students. In all cases, leading by example means setting a standard for positive behavior, rather than trying to discourage negative behavior.

This interesting initiative is a study to resolve long-standing conflicts between different factions of the Montessori philosophy.  The project will collect national data on Montessori so education researchers have a large, well-ordered data set to work with.
