CIO-Asia - Gen Y and Z are technology spearheads: IDC

CIO-Asia - Gen Y and Z are technology spearheads: IDC | we-Learning | Scoop.it

In emerging markets like Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, members of Gen Y and Z, coined for people who were born in or after 1980, are spearheading the adoption of social networking and collaborative tools, according to Sandra Ng, group vice president - ICT practice, IDC Asia Pacific.

The populations within these emerging markets are dominated by a young middle class population. This means that they practically grew up accessing technology that is mainly cloud-based and "they can't tell the difference whether its cloud or not, and simply do not care," said Ng.

Meanwhile, on the enterprise IT side, the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend is still in its infancy, with many CIOs still looking at how to smoothly incorporate different and multiple mobile devices into their infrastructures.

adVancEducation: Learning scales, teaching doesn't | we-Learning | Scoop.it
Ana Cristina Pratas's curator insight, May 7, 5:21 AM

It is this certainty of accelerating change that a culture of learning must address.  Brown and Thomas introduce the concept of the collective in conjunction with their observation that teaching doesn't scale.  This is exactly the problem that Siemens has addressed in his theory of connectivism (connectivism, meet collectivism?) and hence that MOOCs are experimental solutions to.  It is understood that two forms of MOOC are emerging. One kind, the cMOOC, is where learning occurs through interaction within the collective, and the other kind, xMOOC, is developing as a means of offering viable courses to thousands at a time.  Both are attempts to scale access to learning when traditional "teaching" fails under the sheer weight of numbers.

INFOGRAPHIC: How Facebook Could Be Unraveled By Mobile-First Teens

INFOGRAPHIC: How Facebook Could Be Unraveled By Mobile-First Teens | we-Learning | Scoop.it
The threats are all around it. ;
Daniel Tan's insight:

Teenagers are flocking to mobile services that peel away many of the features at the heart of Facebook. Like most trends in the tech industry, the fragmentation of social media has started with the youngest users and is working its way up the age chain.

Right now, cross-posting softens some of the edges of competition. For example, your Tumblr and Pinterest updates can automatically be cross-posted to Facebook. However, given the spate of conflicts between networks recently, one shouldn't assume cross-posting will always be allowed.

“Ditching the teacher-centred, authoritarian pedagogy many mature academics were trained in…seemed like a good idea,” she writes.
Daniel Tan's insight:

There will be landmines in learner-centric pedagogies.THe question is how to manage such situations. Faculty development must include such skill set development in its program. In that regard, there is much we can learn from K12 teacher training in the curriculum called "Classroom Management".

How to use this handbook | Peeragogy.org

How to use this handbook | Peeragogy.org | we-Learning | Scoop.it
Daniel Tan's insight:

If you and a group of other people want to use digital media and networks to co-learn together, this handbook is a practical tool for learning how to self-organize peer learning — what we call “peeragogy.” Material about conceptualizing and convening co-learning — the stuff about getting started — is located toward the top of the table of contents. Material about assessment, resources, use cases is located toward the bottom of the TOC. But you don’t have to read it in sequential order. Hop around if you’d like. We think — and some research seems to support — that understanding how co-learning works will help you do co-learning more effectively. So we’ve included material about learning theories that support peer learning or that reveal useful characteristics of successful peer learning. For those who want to delve more deeply into the empirical research and scholarship, we’ve linked to a sister document — a literature review of learning theory related to peeragogy. For those who want to study more deeply about the aspects of peer learning we summarize in our articles, we provide a list of links to related handbook articles, and a set of resources for further study. Think of our pages as both places to start and as jumping off points.
