APNIC - Internet addressing in the 2010s: IPv4 exhaustion and address transfers, and their impact on IPv6 deployment | Internet Policy and Internet governance | Scoop.it

By Paul Wilson, APNIC Director General
April 2013

He concludes by saying, "IPv6 provides the only means to achieve long-term growth while maintaining the critical technical features of the Internet: globality, neutrality, and openness."

Hopefully this will ease the debate for countries to break up control of the net, and encourage more countries not to wall off and censor the use of the net.

The next chapter in the struggle over global internet governance is just weeks away with the start of theWorld Telecommunication Policy Forum (WTPF) in Geneva, Switzerland. Though WTPF will not result in a binding international treaty like the controversial World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), its outcome documents--known as opinions--will help shape the direction of global internet governance in the coming years.

Below, we break down the key issues to watch, as identified by Access together with the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT). See CDT’s “World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum (WTPF) Issues to Watch” for more.

An Internet ‘free from Government Control:’ A worthy principle | IGP Blog

An Internet ‘free from Government Control:’ A worthy principle | IGP Blog | Internet Policy and Internet governance | Scoop.it

The House bill articulates a worthy principle that can be and should be globally applicable to the Internet. Not controlling the Internet does not mean that there is no role for laws or regulations that safeguard individual rights; it means that national governments should recognize the Internet’s transnational nature and refrain from trying to suppress the rights to free expression and free association that have emerged in the context of a decentralized Internet not under the control of any sovereign.
