We've been discussing the purpose of Central Ideas at my school as well. I am starting to agree that the way they are presented often means that they are more for teachers than for students but I think that they can be useful. Central ideas can be used as models for the younger years so students are exposed to them and when they are ready students can be scaffolded into writing their own.
