Mass Grave

Mass Grave | Wave Sri Lanka | Scoop.it
Catherine Redisi's insight:

After Deraniyagala lost her husband and two sons she began to search for them. She found her husband and younger son in a mask grave like the one shown in her picture. Most of the people in Sri Lanka are very religious and felt the people killed by the tsunami should have a proper burial. Some of these graves were eventually dug up so family members could find their loved ones.

Catholic Relief Services | Sri Lanka

Catholic Relief Services | Sri Lanka | Wave Sri Lanka | Scoop.it
CRS has been working in Sri Lanka since 1994 and supports programs in education, disaster response, health and peace.
Catherine Redisi's insight:

Since Sri Lanka is still recovering form war and the 2004 tsunami, many charities have been created. Catholic Relief Services’ main focus is post-tsunami reconstruction. People donate money to CRS and that money goes to the building supplies. Without this charity reconstruction of Sri Lanka would talk a lot longer than it already is.

Wave by Deraniyagala, Sonali [2013]: Amazon.com: Books

Wave by Deraniyagala, Sonali [2013] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.
Catherine Redisi's insight:

In the book “Wave” Sonali Deraniyagala talks about her traumatic experience with the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka. Sonali’s life changed dramatically. Not only did she lose her husband, she lost her two sons and both her parents. This caused her to fall into a deep depression for months. As you read this novel she writes about her suicidal thoughts and how she doesn’t want to live anymore. Eventually the family begins to hide anything that could harm her, pills, knives, and alcohol. Throughout this memoir you see not only the stages of depression but the stages of the country being put back together.

The three main scopes I am focusing on in the book "Wave" by Sonali Deraniyagala are depression, Sri Lanka, and the tsunami that hit in 2004. Depression is all throughout the book. Sonali writes about her depression quite often. She tells of how she would search ways to kill herself on the internet. The second scope I am focusing on is Sri Lanka. In the beginning of the novel Deraniyagala explains the beauty. She describes her morning with her sons and husband, and how beautiful it is there. But not soon after that the wave hits. Which brings me to my third and final scope, the tsunami. No one really knew how big the wave was but the way Sonali writes you can tell it was terrifying. She explains how she left her parents because she wanted to get her family out of the hotel and to safety, she also tells about the jeep filling with water and then tipping, causing her to lose her family.

The wave

The wave | Wave Sri Lanka | Scoop.it
Catherine Redisi's insight:

This picture amazes me. You can really see the power of the wave in it. All these people running for their lives, like Sonali and her family did. I could never imagine running from that wave. I'm sure there is no words to explain how they felt while this was happening.

Flooded hotel

Flooded hotel | Wave Sri Lanka | Scoop.it
Catherine Redisi's insight:

This picture connects with my book because Sonali and her family were staying in a hotel while they visited. You can see all the damage the tsunami did to the building. This would've been what you see when you walked out of your room. A car sitting in the middle of the room and debris everywhere. The devastation it caused was incredible.

Girl Crying

Girl Crying | Wave Sri Lanka | Scoop.it
Catherine Redisi's insight:

This photo relates to my book because of the emotion. This little girl is obviously scared, Deraniyagala was also scared. She had no one. She had no idea if her husband and two sons were alive or not. When I look at this photo I can feel the anxiety and sadness she has.

Map of Sri Lanka

Catherine Redisi's insight:

Sri Lanka is a beautiful country. It is most known for the Sri Lakan war and the tsunami in 2004. Not only does it have attractions to visit but it is located in the Indian Ocean which gives it amazing beaches. Scuba diving is a common thing done when tourists visit. Weather you choose to visit or live there, Sri Lanka is an amazing place to be.
